MN 2: Sabbāsava Sutta–All the Taints

The Sabbāsava Sutta teaches that the destruction of mental defilements is possible only for those who understand the difference between wise and unwise attention. It outlines seven practical methods—seeing, restraining, using, enduring, avoiding, removing, and developing—by which a practitioner systematically eradicates these taints to make an end of suffering.

MN 3: Dhammadāyāda Sutta–Heirs in Dhamma

The Buddha urges his disciples to value spiritual inheritance over material needs, praising those who choose the Dhamma even at the cost of physical comfort. Following this, Venerable Sāriputta explains that true spiritual inheritance requires training in seclusion and abandoning mental defilements through the Noble Eightfold Path.

MN 4: Bhayabherava Sutta-Fear and Dread

The Bhayabherava Sutta begins with the brahmin Janussoni asking the Buddha if living in remote forest thickets is difficult and if it leads to fear. The Buddha agrees that forest life is hard but explains that fear and dread arise in those who have unpurified bodily, verbal, or mental conduct, or those who are covetous, full of ill will, or lack wisdom.
