Reading guide

The teaching in one sentence

The ten right factors, from right view to right freedom, when developed and cultivated, lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment nowhere except within the Holy One's own training.

The third and final graft, completing the pattern

This discourse completes what AN 10.129 and 10.130 began: AN 10.127's full seven-part liberation formula, now joined to AN 10.128's cultivation condition, the last of three recombinations this chapter's structure has been assembling since its sixth discourse.

The chapter's longest and most demanding compound claim

Combining the fullest formula in the set with the cultivation condition produces this discourse's longest single sentence — a claim that active practice of the ten factors is necessary not merely for some fruitful benefit or the removal of three roots, but for the entire arc of genuine liberation, all seven terms of it, and that this arc belongs to this training alone.

A structure now fully visible

With this discourse, the chapter's underlying architecture is complete and visible in full: five independent claims (AN 10.123–127), a new condition introduced (AN 10.128), and three recombinations of that condition with three of the five earlier claims (AN 10.129–131) — a deliberate structure, not simple repetition, only fully legible once this final recombination is reached.

Key terms

bhāvitā bahulīkatā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattanti — “when developed and cultivated, lead solely to disillusionment... extinguishment” — this discourse's own compound claim, the longest in this chapter's set.
nāññatra sugatavinayā — “not apart from the Holy One's training” — the same exclusivity clause repeated a ninth time.
sammākammanto — “right action” — the fourth factor, unchanged from every earlier list in this chapter.
sammāsamādhi — “right immersion” — the eighth factor, likewise identical throughout.
sammāñāṇaṁ, sammāvimutti — “right knowledge, right freedom” — the ninth and tenth factors, closing this chapter's own final recombined list.

The text

The discourse in full: the compound claim, and the familiar ten-item list. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

Leading solely to extinguishment, when developed

§1“Mendicants, these ten things when developed and cultivated don’t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment apart from the Holy One’s training. What ten? Right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right immersion, right knowledge, and right freedom. These are the ten things that when developed and cultivated don’t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment apart from the Holy One’s training.”
