The Buddha's teachings, in plain English.
The whole body of the Buddha's teaching — the discourses he gave, the treatises the great masters wrote, and the methods of practice handed down for over two thousand years. We are gathering it here, one collection at a time, from both the Theravāda and Mahāyāna traditions, always in language you can actually use.
Where to begin.
Two collections are open now. Each entry has a reading guide written for English speakers, the full text, and a self-check quiz.
The Discourses
Dialogues, parables, and meditation instructions spoken by the Buddha himself, preserved in the Pāli Canon — one sutta at a time.
Forbearance
Eighteen centuries ago the master Nāgārjuna set down twenty-five concrete strategies for not getting hijacked by anger — in plain modern English.
On the way.
Our aim is to bring the whole of the Dharma — both vehicles, every gate of practice — into clear English. These are in preparation.
Mahāyāna Sūtras
The Heart Sūtra, the Diamond Sūtra, and others — with reading guides that open their meaning for the modern reader.
Pure Land & Recitation
The teachings and practices of the Pure Land tradition — Amitābha, the recollection of the Buddha (nianfo), and its masters.
Treatises & Commentaries
Śāstras and commentaries from the great teachers of both traditions — the works that made the teaching practicable.
