Why this discourse

AN 8.66 names the eight liberations in ascending sequence: seeing forms while having physical form, seeing external forms without perceiving form internally, focusing only on beauty, then the four formless dimensions — infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, neither perception nor non-perception — and finally the cessation of perception and feeling.

Reading guide

The teaching in one sentence

The eight liberations ascend from ordinary embodied perception of form, through progressively more refined states of form-perception and pure aesthetic focus, into the four formless meditative dimensions, culminating in the complete cessation of perception and feeling itself.

Three form-based liberations, briefly stated

The first three liberations are each named in a single terse line: having physical form and seeing forms; not perceiving form internally while seeing forms externally; and being focused only on beauty. Unlike the eight dimensions of mastery at AN 8.65, these opening liberations receive no elaboration on scope or aesthetic range.

Four formless dimensions, each explicitly transcending the last

From the fourth liberation onward, the discourse's own language makes the ascending structure explicit: each formless dimension is reached by “going totally beyond” perceptions of the one before it — beyond form to infinite space, beyond infinite space to infinite consciousness, beyond that to nothingness, and beyond that to neither perception nor non-perception.

The eighth liberation, beyond perception itself

The sequence's final step goes further than any refinement of perception: the eighth liberation is the cessation of perception and feeling entirely, not a subtler object to be perceived but the ending of the perceiving-and-feeling process itself, closing a sequence that has moved consistently toward less and less content, not more.

Key terms

vimokkhā — “liberations” — this discourse's own title term, an ascending sequence of meditative states rather than a single moment of release.
rūpī rūpāni passati — “having physical form, they see forms” — the first liberation, ordinary embodied perception of form.
subhanteva adhimutto hoti — “they're focused only on beauty” — the third liberation, a pure aesthetic focus preceding the formless dimensions.
sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā ... ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati — “going totally beyond perceptions of form... they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite space” — the fourth liberation, the first of the four formless dimensions.
saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati — “they enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling” — the eighth and final liberation, going beyond perception itself rather than refining it further.

The text

The discourse in full: the eight liberations in ascending sequence. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

Three form-based liberations

§1“Mendicants, there are these eight liberations. What eight? Having physical form, they see forms. This is the first liberation. Not perceiving form internally, they see forms externally. This is the second liberation. They’re focused only on beauty. This is the third liberation.

Four formless dimensions, each beyond the last

§2Going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite space. This is the fourth liberation. Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ‘consciousness is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite consciousness. This is the fifth liberation. Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ‘there is nothing at all’, they enter and remain in the dimension of nothingness. This is the sixth liberation. Going totally beyond the dimension of nothingness, they enter and remain in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the seventh liberation.

The cessation of perception and feeling

§3Going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, they enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling. This is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations.”
