Why this discourse

The second of this saṃyutta's five-aggregate cycle, applying SN 33.1's own diagnostic structure to feeling: the same ten views, now elided rather than spelled out, arise from not knowing feeling, its origin, its cessation, and the practice leading to its cessation. Confirms that SN 33.1's own diagnosis was never specific to form but a template meant to be run across the whole aggregate set.

Reading guide

The ten views, now elided

Where SN 33.1 spelled out all ten views in full, this discourse compresses them to "the cosmos is eternal, or not eternal … after death, a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists" — naming only the first and last of the list, trusting the reader to supply the rest from SN 33.1.

One word changed, the diagnosis otherwise identical

"It is because of not knowing feeling, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation" — word for word the same structure as SN 33.1, with only rūpa (form) replaced by vedanā (feeling).

Confirming a genuine five-aggregate template

This discourse's own near-identical repetition of SN 33.1's structure confirms the underlying claim was never specific to form: the same diagnostic logic applies uniformly across all five aggregates, feeling included.

Second of five, three more still to come

SN 33.3–5 will apply this identical structure to perception, choices, and consciousness, closing this saṃyutta's own first five-discourse set before the cycle repeats with a new diagnostic verb at SN 33.6–10.

Key terms

vedanā — feeling — the second of the five aggregates, the subject of this specific discourse
aññāṇa — not knowing — the same diagnostic verb as SN 33.1, carried over unchanged
peyyāla — an elision mark — here compressing the ten-view list to its first and last members only
rūpa — form — the aggregate this discourse replaces, carried over by cross-reference from SN 33.1
hetu — cause — Vacchagotta's own opening word, unchanged from SN 33.1

The text

The complete discourse, with the ten-view list elided as the source itself elides it. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1At Sāvatthī. Then the wanderer Vacchagotta said to the Buddha: “What is the cause, worthy Gotama, what is the reason why these various misconceptions arise in the world? That is: the cosmos is eternal, or not eternal … after death, a realized one neither still exists nor no longer exists.” “Vaccha, it is because of not knowing feeling, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation that these various misconceptions arise in the world.

§2This is the cause, this is the reason.”
