Saṃyutta Nikāya · Discourse 55.9

In the Brick Hall (2nd)

Dutiyagiñjakāvasathasutta — Veḷudvāravagga

Setting
Not given — continuing directly from SN 55.8's own setting at Ñātika
Speakers
The Buddha and Venerable Ānanda
Form
A rebirth inquiry for four named individuals, explicitly cross-referenced to SN 55.8
Length
<1 minute to read
Northern parallel
No individual parallel confirmed by this project's own check
Significance
★★★ — a second instance of the Brick Hall inquiry, explicitly pointing back to SN 55.8's own full account rather than repeating it

Why this discourse

Confirmed by direct reading, Ānanda repeats the same pattern from SN 55.8 with four newly named deceased followers — a monk and a nun each named Asoka/Asokā, and a layman and laywoman of the same names — but this discourse's own English source explicitly notes “all is explained as in SN 55.8,” confirming by direct comparison that the underlying content (the mirror of the teaching, and the fourfold hierarchy of attainment) is identical, not merely similar.

Reading guide

Four names, one shared root

Confirmed by direct reading, all four deceased individuals share the name Asoka (masculine) or Asokā (feminine) — literally “sorrowless” — a detail this project notes without further comment, since the discourse itself gives no explanation for the shared name.

A direct cross-reference, confirmed by this project's own comparison

This project's own direct comparison: rather than restating the mirror of the teaching and its own fourfold hierarchy a second time, this discourse's own English source states plainly, “(And all is explained as in SN 55.8),” confirming this project's own established pattern of honest cross-reference rather than silent duplication.

Key terms

bhikkhu asoko kālaṅkato — “the monk named Asoka has passed away” — the first of this discourse's own four named individuals
bhikkhunī asokā — “the nun named Asokā” — the feminine form of the same name, the second individual
(and all is explained as in SN 55.8) — the English source's own explicit cross-reference, confirming identical underlying content rather than a new teaching
ayaṁ so, ānanda, dhammādāso — “this is that mirror of the teaching” — the closing formula, identical to SN 55.8's own
sotāpannohamasmi avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo — “I am a stream-enterer!…destined for awakening” — the self-declaration formula, unchanged from SN 55.8

The text

Every genuinely translated fragment given in the consulted English source, which itself preserves the cross-reference to SN 55.8. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1Ānanda said to the Buddha: “Sir, the monk named Asoka has passed away. Where has he been reborn in his next life? The nun named Asokā, the layman named Asoka, and the laywoman named Asokā have passed away. Where have they been reborn in the next life?” “Ānanda, the monk Asoka passed away having realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life … (And all is explained as in SN 55.8.)

§2This is that mirror of the teaching. A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves: ‘I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! I’m not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am assured, destined for awakening.’”
