Fahua Wenju Translation Notes
Zhiyi’s 《妙法蓮華經文句》(Taishō T1718) is his line-by-line commentary on the Lotus Sūtra, delivered as oral lectures and recorded by his disciple Guanding. Terminology in this project is kept consistent with this site’s three other Zhiyi/Tiantai translations — the Mohe Zhiguan, the Shi Chan Boluomi Cidi Famen, and the Xiao Zhiguan Jiangyi — and with the Jiaoguan Gangzong, which quotes the Wenju itself as an authority. Sūtra-quote terminology (chapter titles, proper names, recurring phrases) follows this site’s own Lotus Sūtra translation wherever the Wenju cites it.
The text and its author
Zhiyi (智顗, 538–597 CE) is the founder of the Tiantai school. The Fahua Wenju, together with the Fahua Xuanyi (妙法蓮華經玄義, setting out the sūtra’s doctrinal architecture) and the Mohe Zhiguan (building a system of practice from the sūtra’s principles), forms the “Tiantai Three Great Works on the Lotus” — though the Wenju alone works through the sūtra’s actual words, phrase by phrase.
Source and copyright
Translated directly from the CBETA edition of the Chinese source text, which is in the public domain (Zhiyi died in 597 CE). Made independently, without reference to any published English translation.
Structure
Ten fascicles (卷), each split by the Taishō edition into “upper” and “lower” halves (之上/之下) for print-volume reasons; this site treats each fascicle’s two halves as one continuous page, matching the convention already used for the Mohe Zhiguan.
Zhiyi’s fourfold interpretive method
The method that structures nearly every passage in the Wenju — kept visible in the translation exactly as Zhiyi presents it, not smoothed over:

| 因緣 | causes and conditions (the “causal-condition” reading) |
| 約教 | in terms of the teachings (the “differentiating the teachings” reading) |
