Why this discourse

The fifth step, and the first of the four formless attainments (āruppa): going entirely beyond perceptions of form, Sāriputta enters the dimension of infinite space — a genuine categorical shift from the four jhānas just completed, which remained grounded in a body still capable of being described in terms of form.

Reading guide

Beyond form altogether

"Going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that 'space is infinite', I entered and remained in the dimension of infinite space" — a different kind of transition than any between the four jhānas: not a refinement within form-based experience, but a move beyond form as a category entirely.

Compression begins, exactly where predicted

As anticipated at SN 28.4, this discourse's own source text compresses to the bare attainment formula plus ellipsis, trusting the reader to supply Ānanda's opening question and closing diagnosis from the pattern already established four times over.

Three perceptions given up in sequence

The formula names three things left behind in turn: perceptions of form itself, perceptions of impingement (the sense of resistance or contact), and perceptions of diversity (the sense of multiplicity) — each progressively subtler than the last, clearing the way for the bare awareness of space as infinite.

Three formless attainments still to come

SN 28.6 through SN 28.8 will continue through infinite consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception, before SN 28.9 returns to full treatment for the cessation of perception and feeling.

Key terms

rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā — going totally beyond perceptions of form — the first condition for entering the formless attainments
paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā — the disappearance of perceptions of impingement — the second condition, the sense of resistance or contact falling away
nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā — not focusing on perceptions of diversity — the third condition, the sense of multiplicity set aside
ākāsānañcāyatana — the dimension of infinite space — the first of the four formless attainments, giving this discourse its name
āruppa — the formless attainments — the four states beyond form this discourse opens, distinct in kind from the four jhānas already examined
