Why this discourse

The sixth step: going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space itself, Sāriputta enters the dimension of infinite consciousness — each formless attainment defined not by what it newly contains, but by going completely beyond the attainment just before it.

Reading guide

Beyond infinite space itself

"Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that 'consciousness is infinite', I entered and remained in the dimension of infinite consciousness" — the formless attainments' own characteristic structure: each one defined as a complete transcendence of the one before it, not an addition to it.

A structural pattern worth naming

Where the four jhānas each added or refined a specific quality (rapture, then its stilling, then equanimity, then equanimity's own purification), the formless attainments instead each simply move past their predecessor entirely — a different logic of progression, worth distinguishing from the jhānas' own.

The same brevity, the same trust

As at SN 28.5, only the bare attainment formula survives in the source, Ānanda's question and diagnosis both left to the reader's own memory of the pattern.

Two formless attainments still to come

SN 28.7 and SN 28.8 will continue through nothingness and neither perception nor non-perception, before SN 28.9 returns to full treatment.

Key terms

ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma — going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space — this discourse's own defining transition
viññāṇañcāyatana — the dimension of infinite consciousness — the second of the four formless attainments, giving this discourse its name
āruppa — the formless attainments — each defined by transcending the one before it, not by adding a new quality
ahaṅkāra, mamaṅkāra, mānānusaya — I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit — Ānanda's own diagnosis, implied though not restated here
peyyāla — an elision mark — continuing this saṃyutta's compression pattern from SN 28.5
