Saṃyutta Nikāya · Discourse 35.125

In the Land of the Vajjis

Vajjīsutta — Gahapativagga

Setting
The land of the Vajjis, at Hatthigāma (Elephant Village)
Speakers
The Buddha and the householder Uggata of Elephant Village
Form
A peyyāla stub — the same question as the previous discourse, with the source itself instructing readers to fill in the answer from there
Length
under a minute to read
Northern parallel
A rough counterpart may exist in the Chinese Saṃyukta-āgama (T99), though this reading guide does not assert a specific matching sutra number
Difficulty
★☆☆☆☆ — the shortest discourse in this vagga so far, understood only alongside SN 35.124

Why this discourse

This is the first of this vagga's own peyyāla stubs: the householder Uggata of Elephant Village asks the identical question Ugga of Vesālī asked in the previous discourse, and the source itself, rather than repeating the full catechism a second time, simply instructs the reader — tell in full as in the previous discourse. Nothing is invented to fill the gap here; the discourse is read exactly as short as bilara-data leaves it, in keeping with this project's practice on other peyyāla stubs encountered throughout the Saṃyutta Nikāya.

Reading guide

A different questioner, a different place, an identical question

Only the householder's name (Uggata, not Ugga) and the location (Elephant Village in the Vajji country, not Vesālī) change. The question itself, word for word, is SN 35.124's own opening question.

An editorial shortcut, not an omission

“Tell in full as in the previous discourse” is a genuine feature of how this material was preserved, not an editorial addition made for this website. It is quoted here exactly as the source gives it, rather than expanded into invented prose.

The nearest full telling, not a fixed formula

“The previous discourse” here means exactly what it says — SN 35.124, sitting directly before this one. The next discourse in this vagga (SN 35.126) will use the identical editorial phrase but resolve it, in translation, to a different target than its own immediately preceding discourse, worth watching for.

Key terms

uggato gahapati hatthigāmako — the householder Uggata of Elephant Village — this discourse's questioner, distinguished by name only from SN 35.124's Ugga of Vesālī
peyyāla — the formal term for a passage the source itself elides, instructing the reader to supply the full wording from elsewhere — exactly what this discourse consists of
yathā purimasuttantaṃ, evaṃ vitthāretabbaṃ — “as in the previous discourse, so it should be elaborated” — the Pali root's own editorial instruction
vajjīsu...hatthigāme — in the land of the Vajjis, at Elephant Village — the one substantive setting change from SN 35.124
dutiyaṃ — “second” — this discourse's own closing colophon, marking its place as the vagga's second

The text

The discourse exactly as short as the source leaves it, including its own editorial instruction. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis at Elephant Village. Then the householder Uggata of Elephant Village went up to the Buddha, sat down to one side, and said to him: “What is the cause, sir, what is the reason why some sentient beings are not fully extinguished in this very life? What is the cause, sir, what is the reason why some sentient beings are fully extinguished in this very life?” … (Tell in full as in the previous discourse.)
