Why this discourse

The first of four consecutive discourses between the same two senior disciples, each confirmed by direct reading to give a genuinely different reason for the same undeclared questions rather than repeating one explanation four times. Here Sāriputta's own answer is structural: each of the four theses about a realized one after death is “included in” one of the five grasping aggregates — the question itself is built from the very material the Buddha's own teaching dismantles, not a separate matter requiring its own separate answer.

Reading guide

A question built from the aggregates themselves

“Does a realized one still exist after death?” is not, on Sāriputta's own analysis, a free-standing question about some entity called “a realized one” — it is “included in form,” “included in feeling,” and so on through all five aggregates, confirmed by reading the discourse's own repeated structure directly: all four theses, restated for each of the five aggregates in turn.

The first of four distinct reasons

This project's own reading of SN 44.4–6 confirms each gives a genuinely different answer to the identical question — not truly knowing the aggregates (SN 44.4), not being rid of desire for them (SN 44.5), and liking or enjoying them without seeing their cessation (SN 44.6) — this discourse's own structural answer is the first of the four, not a summary the others merely restate.

Key terms

rūpasmiṁ... vedanāya... saññāya... saṅkhāresu... viññāṇasmiṁ — “in form... in feeling... in perception... in choices... in consciousness” — the five aggregates each of the four theses is said to be “included in”
hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā — “a realized one still exists after death” — the first of the four undeclared theses, restated for all five aggregates in turn
ayaṁ hetu ayaṁ paccayo — “this is the cause, this is the reason” — the closing formula this discourse and its own three companions each supply with a different content
mahākoṭṭhito — Mahākoṭṭhita, questioning Sāriputta here and answering the identical question himself as the one questioned in SN 44.6
isipatane migadāye — “in the deer park at Isipatana” — the shared setting for all four discourses in this run, near Varanasi

The text

The complete discourse, as genuinely translated — the source itself elides the repetition of each thesis across the five aggregates with an ellipsis, preserved here rather than written out by hand. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

Setting

§1At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita came out of retreat, went to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and said to Sāriputta:

Four questions, unanswered

§2“Reverend Sāriputta, does a realized one still exist after death?” “Reverend, this has not been declared by the Buddha.” “Well then, does a realized one no longer exist after death? … Does a realized one both exist and not exist after death? … Does a realized one neither exist nor not exist after death?” “This too has not been declared by the Buddha.” “Reverend, when asked these questions, you say that they have not been declared by the Buddha. What’s the cause, what’s the reason why they have not been declared by the Buddha?”

Why: each thesis is entangled in one of the five aggregates

§3“Reverend, ‘does a realized one still exist after death?’ is included in form. ‘Does a realized one no longer exist after death?’ is included in form. ‘Does a realized one both still exist and no longer exist after death?’ is included in form. ‘Does a realized one neither still exist nor no longer exist after death?’ is included in form. ‘does a realized one still exist after death?’ is included in feeling … perception … choices … consciousness. ‘Does a realized one no longer exist after death?’ is included in consciousness. ‘Does a realized one both still exist and no longer exist after death?’ is included in consciousness. ‘Does a realized one neither still exist nor no longer exist after death?’ is included in consciousness. This is the cause, this is the reason why this has not been declared by the Buddha.”

Question 2 of 3

Correct: A. Each of the four gives a genuinely different reason, confirmed by direct reading rather than assumed to repeat one explanation.
Question 3 of 3
