Why this discourse
After SN 45.11–12's own cryptic, unresolved treatment of feeling earlier in this saṃyutta, this discourse states the three feelings plainly — pleasant, painful, and neutral — and prescribes the eightfold path with a specific stated purpose: not simply as the way in general, but as what “should be developed to completely understand” these three feelings specifically.
Reading guide
Three feelings, named without elaboration
Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling are simply listed, without the kind of extended analysis this project has met feeling receive in other saṃyuttas — this discourse's own interest lies in prescribing a response, not in analyzing the feelings themselves.
A purpose stated, not merely a path named
“The noble eightfold path should be developed to completely understand these three feelings” gives the path a specific, named function — “complete understanding” (pariññā) is a term this project has met before as one stage among several (understanding, then abandoning desire, then realizing cessation), here named as the eightfold path's own specific target regarding feeling.
A tidy pattern SN 45.30 immediately extends
This discourse's own short template — name a topic, then prescribe the eightfold path with a specific stated purpose — is repeated with a different topic and a different purpose (“give up” rather than “completely understand”) in SN 45.30, the vagga's own closing discourse, confirmed by direct comparison of both discourses' own final sentences.
Key terms
tisso vedanā — “three feelings” — pleasant, painful, and neutral, this discourse's own opening list
sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā — “pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling” — the three named without further elaboration
pariññāya — “to completely understand” — the specific purpose this discourse assigns to developing the eightfold path
ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo — “the noble eightfold path should be developed” — the prescription this discourse and SN 45.30 both share, with different stated purposes
pariññā — “complete understanding” — a term this project has met elsewhere as one stage among several regarding a topic, here named as the eightfold path's own specific target

The noble eightfold path should be developed to completely understand these three feelings. What is the noble eightfold path? It is right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This noble eightfold path should be developed to completely understand these three feelings.”
