Pācīnādisutta — Punagaṅgāpeyyālavagga

Setting
Not given — matching the river formula already met at SN 50.1-12
Speakers
The Buddha (implied)
Form
A river simile, twelve discourses merged into a single bilara-data file
Length
<1 minute to read
Northern parallel
No individual parallel confirmed by this project's own check
Significance
★★★★☆ — confirms SN 50's own tenfold vagga structure: five vaggas, then the identical five repeated with a “Puna-” prefix

Why this discourse

This vagga's own name, “Punagaṅgāpeyyālavagga” (“Another Chapter of Abbreviated Texts on the Ganges”), confirms in the text's own words what this project's own SN 50.45-54 already suggested: SN 50 restarts its own five-vagga cycle (Gaṅgā, Appamāda, Balakaraṇīya, Esanā, Ogha) a second time, mirroring the identical structure already confirmed at SN 48's own Vaggas 8-15.

Reading guide

SN 50's own tenfold structure, now confirmed

Confirmed by direct reading of this file's own closing colophon (“Gaṅgāpeyyālavaggo chaṭṭho,” “the Ganges Abbreviated-Texts chapter, the sixth”), SN 50's own ten merged bilara-data files correspond exactly to ten vaggas: Gaṅgā, Appamāda, Balakaraṇīya, Esanā, and Ogha, each repeated once more with a “Puna-” prefix — matching SN 48's own Vaggas 8-15 structure precisely.

The removal-of-greed formula, matching SN 48.125-136

Confirmed by direct reading, this vagga's own closing formula is “rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ” (“culminating in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion”), and its own cross-reference explicitly confirms this: “tell in full for each of the different rivers as in SN 45.91–102, removal of greed version” — matching this project's own already-completed SN 48.125-136 rather than the original “seclusion” formula from SN 50.1-12.

Twelve discourses, confirmed by the identical uddāna

This vagga's own closing uddāna is character-for-character identical to SN 50.1-12's own and to every other instance of this formula this project has met — six on slanting east, six on slanting to the ocean, twelve total.

Key terms

gaṅgā nadī pācīnaninnā pācīnapoṇā pācīnapabbhārā — “the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east” — identical to SN 50.1-12's own opening simile
rāgavinayapariyosānaṁ dosavinayapariyosānaṁ mohavinayapariyosānaṁ — “culminating in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion” — this vagga's own genuinely different closing formula, matching SN 48.125-136's own
tell in full for each of the different rivers as in SN 45.91-102, removal of greed version — the English source's own explicit cross-reference, confirming both the source range and the specific closing-formula variant
Gaṅgāpeyyālavaggo chaṭṭho — “the Ganges Abbreviated-Texts chapter, the sixth” — this file's own closing colophon, confirming this vagga's own position and SN 50's own restarted cycle
Punagaṅgāpeyyālavaggo — this vagga's own name, identical to the pattern already met at SN 48's own Vagga 13, confirming SN 50's own tenfold vagga structure

The text

Every genuinely translated fragment given in the consulted English source, including its own closing uddāna. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1“Mendicants, the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. In the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment. And how does a mendicant who develops the five powers slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment? It’s when a mendicant develops the powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, which culminate in the removal of greed, hate, and delusion. That’s how a mendicant who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.”

Cross-reference(Tell in full for each of the different rivers as in SN 45.91–102, removal of greed version.)

UddānaSix on slanting to the east, and six on slanting to the ocean; these two sixes make twelve, and that’s how this chapter is recited.
