Significance
★★★☆☆ — genuinely lacks the colophon and uddāna every prior instance of this discourse carried, confirmed by direct reading rather than assumed present

Why this discourse

This discourse gives the five higher fetters in full, developed by the five powers — but unlike every prior instance of this exact discourse this project has met (SN 48.115-124, SN 48.169-178, SN 49.45-54), this file carries no closing colophon and no uddāna at all. Confirmed by directly listing bilara-data's own directory: five further merged files follow this one, meaning Vagga 5 does not close SN 50 itself, unlike its own namesakes in SN 48 and SN 49.

Reading guide

A vagga closing, not a saṃyutta closing

Confirmed by direct reading, this file's own final segment is simply “(Evaṁ vitthāretabbā),” (“thus it should be elaborated”) — no “Oghavaggo pañcamo”-style colophon, and no uddāna verse, appear anywhere in this file. Confirmed by directly listing bilara-data's own directory, five further merged files (SN 50.55-66 through SN 50.99-108) follow, meaning this vagga does not close the saṃyutta, unlike its own SN 48 and SN 49 counterparts.

The five higher fetters, once more

Mirroring the higher-fetters discourse already met three times before, this discourse gives the five higher fetters (desire for the form and formless realms, conceit, restlessness, ignorance) in full, now developed by the five powers rather than the eightfold path, five faculties, or four right efforts.

A genuinely larger saṃyutta, confirmed rather than assumed

This project's own explicit observation: SN 50's own ten merged files (versus SN 49's own five) already suggested a roughly doubled scale when this saṃyutta was first opened; this file's own missing colophon, confirming further content still lies ahead, settles that suggestion into direct confirmation rather than leaving it an inference.

Key terms

uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni — “the higher fetters” — identical to this discourse's own three prior instances at SN 48.115-124, SN 48.169-178, and SN 49.45-54
pañca balāni bhāvetabbāni — “the five powers should be developed” — this saṃyutta's own governing subject, closing this vagga
(Evaṁ vitthāretabbā) — “thus it should be elaborated” — this file's own final segment, with no colophon or uddāna following it, genuinely unlike this discourse's own three prior instances
vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ — “relying on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, ripening as letting go” — the closing formula for each power's own development
Oghavaggo — “the Floods chapter” — this vagga's own name, confirmed at its own opening “0.2” field as the fifth vagga, though no closing colophon confirms this within the file itself

The text

The complete content of this file, which ends without a closing colophon or uddāna. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1“Mendicants, there are five higher fetters. What five? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. These are the five higher fetters. The five powers should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. What five? It’s when a mendicant develops the powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. These five powers should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.” (Tell in full as in SN 45.171–179, with the above as the final discourse.)

3 questions. Click an answer to see immediate feedback. No score is recorded — this is for your own checking.

Question 1 of 3
What genuinely differs about this file compared to this discourse's own three prior instances?
Correct: A. Confirmed by direct reading — the file simply ends after its own cross-reference instruction.
Question 2 of 3
What does directly listing bilara-data's own directory confirm about this vagga's own position?
Correct: A. Confirmed by directly listing the directory rather than assumed from the vagga's own recurring name.
Question 3 of 3
What does this project note about SN 50's own overall scale?
Correct: A. The ten merged files already suggested a larger saṃyutta; this file's own structure confirms it directly.
