Saṃyutta Nikāya · Discourse 54.15

Several Mendicants (1st)

Paṭhamabhikkhusutta — Dutiyavagga

Setting
Not given — continuing directly from SN 54.14's own setting
Speakers
Several mendicants (sambahulā bhikkhū) and the Buddha
Form
The identical question from SN 54.13, now asked collectively; the compressed answer follows
Length
<1 minute to read
Northern parallel
No individual parallel confirmed by this project's own check
Significance
★★★ — a third occurrence of the same chain-question, now asked by a group of mendicants rather than a single named disciple

Why this discourse

Confirmed by direct reading, this discourse repeats the identical chain-question already met at SN 54.13 and SN 54.14 — whether one thing fulfills four, which fulfill seven, which fulfill two — but this time it is “several mendicants” (sambahulā bhikkhū), not a single named disciple, who ask it. The Buddha confirms the answer directly and gives it in full, then compresses the step-by-step explanation via “…pe…”, pointing back to SN 54.13's own already-translated account.

Reading guide

A third occurrence, now asked collectively

This project's own observation: this is the third time in this vagga this exact chain-question has appeared — first from Ānanda alone (SN 54.13), then from the Buddha to Ānanda (SN 54.14), and now from an unnamed group of mendicants together — suggesting the question and its own answer were significant enough to be recorded across multiple distinct occasions and audiences.

A full answer, a compressed explanation

Confirmed by direct reading, unlike SN 54.14's own compression of the entire chain, this discourse states the full one-four-seven-two chain by name (breath, the satipaṭṭhānas, the awakening factors, knowledge and freedom) before eliding only the step-by-step explanation of each link via “…pe…”, assuming SN 54.13's own full account.

Key terms

sambahulā bhikkhū — “several mendicants” — this discourse's own questioners, unnamed and collective, unlike SN 54.13's own single questioner Ānanda
atthi kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo — “there is, mendicants” — the Buddha's own direct confirmation, addressed to the group
ānāpānassatisamādhi...cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti — “immersion due to mindfulness of breathing…fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation” — the chain's own first link, identical to SN 54.13's own
…pe… — the elision marking, standing in for SN 54.13's own full step-by-step explanation
vijjāvimuttiṁ paripūrenti — “fulfill knowledge and freedom” — the chain's own final link, closing this discourse exactly as it closed SN 54.13 and SN 54.14

The text

Every genuinely translated fragment given in the consulted English source, which itself preserves the elision back to SN 54.13. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: “Sir, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills four things; and those four things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill seven things; and those seven things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill two things?” “There is, mendicants.”

§2“Sir, what is that one thing?” “Immersion due to mindfulness of breathing is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. And the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors. And the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.

§3And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation? … That’s how the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated so as to fulfill knowledge and freedom.”
