Three knowledges, a great meditator

Tevijjo (‘master of the three knowledges’), mahājhāyī (‘great meditator’), and cetosamathakovido (‘expert in serenity of heart’) build a compact, three-part self-description before the verse turns to its closing claim: sadattho me anuppatto, ‘I've realized my heart's own goal’. It is one of this collection's more standard testimony verses, without a distinctive image or narrative frame of its own.

A sixth Vaccha, and the first to remove the ambiguity

Vacchagotta is the sixth name in this collection built on the word vaccha, after Cūḷavaccha, Mahāvaccha, and Vanavaccha (1st) in Chapter Two, Ukkhepakatavaccha in Chapter Seven, and Vacchapāla in Chapter Eight. Unlike Vacchapāla, where this reading guide couldn't determine whether ‘vaccha’ meant the common noun ‘calf’ or the clan name, gotta (‘clan, lineage’) attached directly here removes any doubt: this elder is explicitly named as a member of the Vaccha clan.

A name shared with a famous questioner, but not a distinctive one

Vacchagotta is also the name most associated, throughout the wider canon, with a wanderer who repeatedly questioned the Buddha on unanswered points. But ‘Vacchagotta’ functions as a clan designation — ‘of the Vaccha clan’ — rather than a unique personal name, so this reading guide treats any specific identification with that wanderer as no more likely than the many other same-clan-name cases already noted in this collection.
