The Spirits Who Attend the Buddha, and the Lords of the Natural World
Having named the bodhisattva assembly led by Samantabhadra, the sūtra now turns to a roster unlike anything in the rest of the Buddhist canon: category after category of spirits, each numbering in the countless or immeasurable, each introduced by ten (or so) representative names before the sūtra states what every member of that class has in common. This installment covers the spirits who attend the Buddha directly, and fifteen further classes who govern every feature of the natural world — cities, the earth, mountains, forests, medicinal plants, crops, rivers, seas, waters, fire, wind, space, the directions, and the difference between night and day.
The Spirits Who Attend the Buddha
There were, moreover, Vajra-Wielding Spirits as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system, named as follows: the Vajra-Wielding Spirit Nārāyaṇa of Wondrous Form, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of the Swift Sun-Wheel Banner, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of Sumeru's Flower-Light, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of Pure Cloud-Voice, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit Beautiful in Every Faculty, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of Light Delightful to Behold, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of the Great Tree's Thunder-Voice, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of the Lion King's Light, the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of the Hidden Flame's Supreme Eye, and the Vajra-Wielding Spirit of Lotus Light and the Maṇi Topknot — spirits such as these, and more, as their foremost, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system in all. Every one of them had, in ages past across immeasurable kalpas, constantly made a great vow: the vow to draw near to and make offerings to every buddha forever; following that vow in their conduct, they had already brought it to fulfillment, reaching the farther shore; they had accumulated boundless and pure meritorious deeds, and had already become entirely clear as to the domain traversed by every samādhi; having attained the power of spiritual transmutation, they dwelt wherever the Tathāgata dwelt, entering the inconceivable domain of liberation; abiding amid the assembly, their majestic light stood out distinctly, and, according to what each living being required, they manifested a body and showed it how to be tamed; wherever any buddha's transformation-body appeared, they went there accordingly in transformed form; and wherever any Tathāgata dwelt, they constantly and diligently guarded that place.
There were, moreover, Body-Attending Spirits as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system, named as follows: the Body-Attending Spirit of the Flower-Topknot's Adornment, the Body-Attending Spirit of Light Illumining the Ten Directions, the Body-Attending Spirit of the Ocean-Voice's Taming, the Body-Attending Spirit of the Pure Flower's Adorned Topknot, the Body-Attending Spirit of Immeasurable Dignity, the Body-Attending Spirit of the Supreme Light's Adornment, the Body-Attending Spirit of Pure Light and Fragrant Cloud, the Body-Attending Spirit of Guarding and Upholding, the Body-Attending Spirit Who Universally Manifests to Gather Beings In, and the Unmoving Body-Attending Spirit of Light — spirits such as these, and more, as their foremost, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system in all, every one of them having, in ages past, fulfilled a great vow to make offerings to and serve every buddha.
There were, moreover, Foot-Walking Spirits as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system, named as follows: the Foot-Walking Spirit of the Jeweled-Seal Hand, the Foot-Walking Spirit of Lotus Light, the Foot-Walking Spirit of the Pure Flower Topknot, the Foot-Walking Spirit Who Gathers In Every Wholesome Sight, the Foot-Walking Spirit of the Wondrous Jeweled Star-Banner, the Foot-Walking Spirit Who Delights to Utter Wondrous Sound, the Foot-Walking Spirit of the Sandalwood Tree's Light, the Foot-Walking Spirit of the Lotus-Flower's Brightness, the Foot-Walking Spirit of Subtle and Wondrous Brightness, and the Foot-Walking Spirit Who Gathers Wondrous Flowers — spirits such as these, and more, as their foremost, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system in all, every one of them having, in ages past across immeasurable kalpas, drawn near to the Tathāgata, following after him without ever forsaking him.
There were, moreover, Awakening-Site Spirits as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system, named as follows: the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Pure Adornment's Banner, the Awakening-Site Spirit of Sumeru's Jeweled Light, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Thunder-Voice Banner's Mark, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Raining Flowers' Wondrous Eye, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Flower-Wreath's Light-Topknot, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Raining Jewels' Adornment, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Valiant, Fragrant Eye, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Vajra Rainbow-Cloud, the Awakening-Site Spirit of the Lotus-Flower's Brightness, and the Awakening-Site Spirit of Wondrous Light's Radiance — spirits such as these, and more, as their foremost, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-world-system in all, every one of them having, in the past, encountered immeasurable buddhas, brought the power of their vows to fulfillment, and made offerings on a vast scale.
These four classes are the spirits closest to the Buddha's own person and the ground he sits on — wielding the vajra, attending his body, walking at his feet, and inhabiting the awakening site itself — and each closing description is calibrated to that closeness: the vajra-wielders take a vow to draw near forever, the foot-walking spirits follow "without ever forsaking him," and the awakening-site spirits have earned their place by encountering countless buddhas across the past. Chinese Buddhist iconography would later draw directly on the first of these categories: the fierce vajra-wielding guardian figures (執金剛神, Vajrapāṇi) still flanking temple gates today descend from exactly this class of being, here individually named for the first of what the sūtra will show is a truly vast catalog.
Lords of Cities, the Earth, Mountains, and Forests

Notice how the closing formula for each class quietly matches its domain: the earth-lords vow to labor "together with" the buddhas as fellow cultivators, the mountain-lords have gained a "pure eye" fit for surveying vast heights, and the forest-lords are praised simply for how much light they give off — a fitting note for spirits of leaf and canopy. Huayan commentary treats this entire roster of nature-spirits as a working demonstration of 事事無礙 (shìshì wú'ài), the "unobstructed interpenetration of phenomenon and phenomenon" that Fazang later systematized: a mountain, a city gate, and a single leaf are each shown here to be inseparable from an awakened intention, each governed by a being whose very nature is bound up with the Buddha's own path.
Lords of Medicine, the Harvest, Rivers, the Sea, and Water

The vow-formulas here quietly track how each element relates to living beings: the herb-lords are "benevolent and compassionate," fitting for spirits of medicine; the river- and water-lords are singled out for "rescuing and protecting," fitting for spirits of a force that can flood as easily as it nourishes; and the sea-lords alone are described as having the Tathāgata's entire ocean of merit filling their bodies — an image the text itself seems to have reached for precisely because the sea was the one natural feature vast enough to serve as its own metaphor.

These four classes govern what cannot be pinned to any one location — fire and wind move, space has no boundary, and "direction" is a relation rather than a place — and the closing formulas shift accordingly toward inner qualities rather than outer deeds: the wind-lords "dispel the mind of pride," the space-lords have minds "free of defilement, vast, bright, and clear." The fire-lords are the one class here given an explicitly beneficial role toward suffering beings — extinguishing "burning affliction" (熱惱, a standard term for the mental heat of the kleśas) — a reminder that even fire, in this cosmology, is finally in service of relieving distress rather than causing it.
Lords of Night and Day

This closes the fifteen classes of nature-spirits, and with them the whole terrestrial half of the sūtra's roster — every spirit so far has governed something rooted in or moving through this world: cities, earth, mountain, forest, plant, harvest, river, sea, water, fire, wind, space, direction, night, day. Part 3 rises out of the terrestrial world entirely, into the eight great classes of non-human kings — asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, yakṣas, nāgas, kumbhāṇḍas, and gandharvas — and then higher still, through the sun and moon devas and every heaven up to the form realm.
Part 2 Complete
This closes Part 2: the vajra-wielding, body-attending, foot-walking, and awakening-site spirits who attend the Buddha directly, and the fifteen classes of spirits who govern cities, the earth, mountains, forests, medicinal plants, the harvest, rivers, the sea, water, fire, wind, space, the directions, and night and day. Part 3 continues the roster begun here with the eight great classes of non-human kings and the devas of sun, moon, and every heaven up through the form realm, completing this extraordinary catalog and, with it, the whole of fascicle one.
