Thirteen Reasons, One Question
Rather than the plain formula he has repeated to every teacher so far, Good-Wealth now unfolds thirteen distinct reasons behind his own bodhicitta — one for every kind of suffering, one for every kind of freedom — before finally arriving at a single new question: how can he become a support for every being at once?
Thirteen "For the Sake Of"
Each clause names a different escape or arrival — out of suffering, out of the ocean of birth and death, out of the river of craving, out of the city of the three realms — building toward a question that has never quite been phrased this way before: not simply how to practice, but how to become something every being can lean on.
爾時，善財頂禮其足，遶無量匝，合掌而立，白言：「聖者！我為利益一切眾生故，為令一切眾生出諸苦難故，為令一切眾生究竟安樂故，為令一切眾生出生死海故，為令一切眾生住法寶洲故，為令一切眾生枯竭愛河故，為令一切眾生起大慈悲故，為令一切眾生捨離欲愛故，為令一切眾生渴仰佛智故，為令一切眾生出生死曠野故，為令一切眾生樂諸佛功德故，為令一切眾生出三界城故，為令一切眾生入一切智城故，發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，而未知菩薩云何學菩薩行，云何修菩薩道，能為一切眾生作依止處？」
At that time, Good-Wealth bowed his head at his feet, circumambulated him countless times, and stood with palms joined, saying: "Noble one! For the sake of benefiting every being, for the sake of causing every being to escape every difficulty and suffering, for the sake of causing every being to attain ultimate peace and happiness, for the sake of causing every being to escape the ocean of birth and death, for the sake of causing every being to abide on the island of the dharma-treasure, for the sake of causing every being to dry up the river of craving, for the sake of causing every being to give rise to great loving-kindness and compassion, for the sake of causing every being to abandon and leave behind desire and craving, for the sake of causing every being to thirst after and admire the Buddha's own wisdom, for the sake of causing every being to escape the vast wilderness of birth and death, for the sake of causing every being to delight in every buddha's own merit, for the sake of causing every being to escape the city of the three realms, and for the sake of causing every being to enter the city of omniscience, I have given rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva learns the bodhisattva practices, or how a bodhisattva cultivates the bodhisattva path, so as to become a support for every being?"
能為一切眾生作依止處 — so as to become a support for every being. Every teacher before Enlightened Wisdom has been asked some form of "how does a bodhisattva learn the bodhisattva practices." This is the first time Good-Wealth attaches an explicit goal to that question — not simply learning the path, but becoming something other beings can actually rely on.
Part 1004 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-five. Part 1005 turns to Enlightened Wisdom's own reply, praising Good-Wealth for giving rise to bodhicitta at all, and naming ten things that follow for anyone who truly seeks a good spiritual friend.
