Enlightened Wisdom's Own Praise
Before answering Good-Wealth's own question, Enlightened Wisdom praises the mind of bodhi itself as something rare beyond measure, names ten things that follow for anyone who truly seeks a good spiritual friend, and then reveals that his own vast assembly of attendants all reached that same mind through him.
Ten Things That Follow From Seeking a Good Spiritual Friend
Enlightened Wisdom's own praise moves quickly from bodhicitta itself to what it makes possible — ten distinct qualities, each a different way of never wearying, never abandoning, and never growing lax in the pursuit of a good spiritual friend.
The householder said: "Excellent, excellent! Good son, you have indeed been able to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Good son, giving rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi — such a person is difficult to find. If one is able to give rise to this mind, such a person is then able to seek the bodhisattva practices, encountering good spiritual friends forever without weariness or satiation, drawing near to good spiritual friends forever without fatigue or weariness, making offerings to good spiritual friends forever without tiring or growing lax, attending and serving good spiritual friends without ever giving rise to sorrow, seeking out good spiritual friends never regressing, cherishing good spiritual friends never abandoning them, attending and serving good spiritual friends without a moment's rest, gazing up at good spiritual friends without ever pausing, practicing good spiritual friends' own teaching, never once growing lazy, and receiving good spiritual friends' own mind without any error or fault.
An Entire Assembly, All Reached Through Him
Enlightened Wisdom now points to his own gathered attendants — the same ten thousand Good-Wealth already saw surrounding his throne — and reveals that every one of them owes their own mind of bodhi, their own rebirth into the tathāgata's family, to him alone.
"Good son, have you seen this assembly of people around me?" Good-Wealth replied: "Yes indeed! I have seen them." The householder said: "Good son, I have already caused them to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, to be born into the tathāgata's own family, to grow in wholesome dharmas, to abide securely in every measureless pāramitā, to study the buddha's own ten powers, to leave behind the seed of the world, to abide in the seed of the tathāgata, to abandon the wheel of birth and death, to turn the wheel of the true dharma, to extinguish the three evil destinies, and to abide in the destiny of the true dharma, so that, like every bodhisattva, they are entirely able to rescue and protect every being."
我已令其發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心 — I have already caused them to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. The ten thousand attendants Good-Wealth admired for their own splendor back in Part 1003 turn out to be Enlightened Wisdom's own students — every ornament and every note of music surrounding his throne was, in effect, already evidence of a teaching already given.
Part 1005 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-five. Part 1006 turns to Enlightened Wisdom naming his own liberation — the ability to bring forth whatever any being needs at will — and the beginning of a list naming everything that liberation can provide.
