A Dharma Matched to Every Desire
Once each being's own material need is met, Enlightened Wisdom does not stop there — food becomes an occasion to teach the practice of merit, drink becomes a lesson in releasing attachment, and clothing becomes the garment of conscience itself, each ordinary object turned into its own doorway to the Great Vehicle.
Food, Drink, Flavor, Vehicle, and Clothing
Each satisfied desire becomes the exact shape of its own teaching — those fed receive eight practices built around merit and unyielding strength, those given drink learn to release attachment, those clothed receive the garment of conscience, and every one of them departs having heard a dharma fitted precisely to what first brought them there.
Namely: for those satisfied by obtaining delicious food, he taught them the practice of accumulating merit, the practice of leaving poverty behind, the practice of knowing every dharma, the practice of accomplishing the food of dharma-joy and meditative delight, the practice of cultivating and perfecting every excellent mark, the practice of growing and accomplishing what cannot be subdued, the practice of skillfully understanding the unsurpassed food, and the practice of accomplishing the inexhaustible great power of majesty that subdues Māra's own enmity; for those satisfied by obtaining fine drink, he taught them the dharma, causing them, amid birth and death, to abandon and leave behind love and attachment, and enter the flavor of the buddha-dharma; for those who obtained every kind of supreme flavor, he taught them the dharma, causing all of them to attain the mark of every buddha and tathāgata's own supreme flavor; for those satisfied by obtaining carriages and vehicles, he proclaimed for them every kind of dharma-gate, causing all of them to be carried by the Great Vehicle; and for those satisfied by obtaining clothing, he taught them the dharma, causing them to attain the pure garment of conscience and shame, even up to the tathāgata's own pure and wondrous form. In this way, there was nothing that was not universally provided for, and afterward, he taught the dharma to all of them exactly as was fitting. Having heard the dharma, they returned to their own original places.
令得清淨慚愧之衣 — causing them to attain the pure garment of conscience and shame. Among everything given here, clothing alone receives a teaching that turns the object itself inside out — an ordinary garment becomes the occasion for an entirely inward kind of covering, one made of conscience rather than cloth.
Part 1007 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-five. Part 1008 turns to Enlightened Wisdom's own confession of limitation, comparing the great bodhisattvas to hands of jewels that rain down every provision across the ten directions, before closing fascicle sixty-five with the naming of a fifteenth teacher.
