Every Disease That Afflicts Every Being
Good-Wealth's journey to his sixteenth teacher costs him real hardship for the first time in a while — and what he finds at the end of it is an elder whose own practice begins with the plainest kind of compassion: curing whatever illness comes to him.
Hardship on the Road to Universal Gate
Unlike his swift arrivals at a market stall or a riverbank, Good-Wealth's journey to Universal Eye is marked by real toil — and it is only by holding fast to his good spiritual friends' own teaching that he reaches the high battlements of Universal Gate city at all.
At that time, Good-Wealth, having heard of this liberation from the elder Dharma-Jewel-Topknot, deeply entered every buddha's own measureless knowledge and vision, abided securely in the bodhisattva's own measureless supreme practices, thoroughly understood the bodhisattva's own measureless skillful means, aspired to the bodhisattva's own measureless dharma-gates, purified the bodhisattva's own measureless faith and understanding, sharpened the bodhisattva's own measureless faculties, accomplished the bodhisattva's own measureless aspirations, penetrated the bodhisattva's own measureless gates of practice, increased the bodhisattva's own measureless power of vows, raised up the bodhisattva's own unsurpassable banner, and gave rise to the bodhisattva's own wisdom that illuminates the bodhisattva's own dharma. Journeying onward by stages, he arrived in the land of Vine-Root, inquiring and searching for where that city might be found. Though he passed through hardship, he did not shrink from toil, but held only the true recollection of his good spiritual friends' own teaching in mind, wishing always to draw near to them, serve and make offerings to them, spurring on every one of his own faculties and departing from every form of laxity. Only then did he finally see Universal Gate city, surrounded on every side by hundreds and thousands of villages, its battlements rising high, its streets broad and level. Seeing that elder, he went to him, bowed his head before him, stood with palms joined, and said: "Noble one, I have already given rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva learns the bodhisattva practices, or cultivates the bodhisattva path?" The elder said: "Excellent, excellent! Good son, you have indeed been able to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
雖歷艱難,不憚勞苦 — though he passed through hardship, he did not shrink from toil. Most of Good-Wealth's journeys in this pilgrimage are described in a single clause — "journeying onward by stages" — before he simply arrives. Here the text pauses to name the difficulty explicitly, a small but pointed reminder that the ease of most encounters is not the rule but the exception.
Every Disease, Named
Universal Eye's own introduction to his practice is disarmingly direct — no liberation-gate named yet, only a plain claim to know and to heal whatever illness a body can suffer.
「善男子!我知一切眾生諸病:風黃痰熱、鬼魅、蠱毒,乃至水火之所傷害。如是一切所生諸疾,我悉能以方便救療。
"Good son, I know every disease that afflicts every being: wind, jaundice, phlegm, fever, possession by ghosts and spirits, poisoning by sorcery, and even injury by water and fire. All such illnesses that arise, I am entirely able to heal and cure through skillful means.
Part 1012 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-six. Part 1013 follows Universal Eye's practice further, as those he heals also receive food, bathing, and adornment, and then a dharma teaching matched precisely to their own underlying affliction of mind.
