A Single Incense, Filling the Dharma-Realm
Universal Eye's second gift, after healing, is a mastery of blending fragrance so complete that a single strand of incense multiplies without limit, filling every buddha's own assembly-hall throughout the entire dharma-realm with palaces, towers, and clouds made entirely of scent.
Nine Kinds of Incense, Three Vows
Universal Eye names nine kinds of incense he knows how to blend, then explains what he does with them — an offering that lets him behold every buddha and fulfill three vows at once.
"Good son, I also skillfully understand the essential methods of blending every kind of incense — namely: incense without equal, sindhuvāra incense, unsurpassed incense, incense of awakening, aruṇavatī incense, firm black sandalwood incense, uragasāra sandalwood incense, aloeswood incense, and incense that stills every faculty. I know entirely how to prepare and blend incenses such as these. Moreover, good son, I hold this incense as an offering, and through it universally behold every buddha, my every wish entirely fulfilled — namely: the vow to rescue and protect every being, the vow to adorn and purify every buddha-land, and the vow to make offerings to every tathāgata.
This is the shortest incense-list of this pilgrimage — nine names, most of them descriptive (incense without equal, incense of awakening, incense that stills every faculty) rather than the sprawling phonetic catalogues found elsewhere in the sūtra.
One Strand, an Entire Dharma-Realm of Incense
When Universal Eye actually burns this incense, its multiplication has no limit at all — every single strand becomes measureless further incense, building palaces, towers, and even clouds and rain out of nothing but fragrance.
"Moreover, good son, when I burn this incense, from within each single strand of incense measureless further incense emerges, reaching throughout the ten directions to every buddha's own assembly-hall and place of enlightenment in every part of the dharma-realm, becoming now a palace of incense, now a hall of incense — incense balustrades, incense walls, incense parapets, incense doors and windows, incense multi-storied towers, incense crescent-moon terraces, incense canopies, incense banners, incense pennants, incense curtains, incense nets, incense images, incense ornaments, incense light, and incense clouds and rain, filling every single place as adornment.
The Great King of Medicine
Universal Eye's own confession returns to the same comparison that opened his teaching — bodhisattvas as the great king of medicine, whose mere sight, sound, or name is never wasted on anyone who encounters it.
"Good son, I only know this dharma-gate of causing every being to universally behold every buddha with joy. As for the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, who are like the great king of medicine — whether beings see them, hear them, recall them in mind, dwell alongside them, follow and accompany them, or simply call out their name, all obtain benefit, with none passing by them in vain; if any being should even briefly encounter them, they are certain to extinguish every affliction, enter the buddha-dharma, leave behind every aggregate of suffering, forever put to rest every fear of birth and death, reach the place of fearless omniscience, shatter the great mountain of old age and death, and abide securely in the bliss of equality and quiescence. How could I possibly know or speak of their own meritorious practice?
無空過者 — none passing by them in vain. Universal Eye's own practice has moved, in this single episode, from curing disease to blending incense to this final image of a bodhisattva whose very presence heals — the same logic each time, only the medicine changing form.
