Like the Ocean, Like Mount Sumeru
Untouched by the wealth surrounding him, Good-Wealth finds King Great Light seated at a crossroads on a throne of wish-fulfilling maṇi-lotus, described through nine similes that move from a mountain of gold to an island filled entirely with the jewels of wisdom.
Untouched, and Single-Pointed
Surrounded by wealth beyond counting, Good-Wealth's own mind remains free of attachment to any of it — his single desire is simply to see his good spiritual friend, and that desire alone leads him to the crossroads where King Great Light sits.
At that time, Good-Wealth, amid all these wondrous jeweled things, and even amid every realm of the six sense-objects — men and women included — held no attachment to any of it, but rightly reflected only on the ultimate dharma, his mind single-pointed and joyfully longing to see his good spiritual friend. Journeying onward by stages, he saw King Great Light, not far from the tower where he dwelt, seated at a crossroads upon a vast and magnificently adorned lion-throne formed from a treasury of wish-fulfilling maṇi-lotuses, its legs made of dark blue lapis lazuli, its canopy of golden silk, its net of every kind of jewel, and its cushion of the finest heavenly garments.
Nine Similes for a King
The king's own body, marked with the thirty-two and eighty marks of a great being, is described through nine similes in succession — mountain, sun, moon, Brahmā, ocean, snow mountain, cloud, sky, and Sumeru — before settling on the image of an island filled entirely with jewels of wisdom.
The king sat cross-legged upon it, his body adorned with the twenty-eight marks of a great being and the eighty minor marks; like a mountain of true gold, his radiance blazed forth; like the sun in a clear sky, his majestic light shone brilliantly; like the full moon, whoever saw him felt cooled and refreshed; like the Brahmā king amid his own Brahmā-host; also like the great ocean, his treasury of meritorious dharma without any bound; also like the snow mountain, his excellent marks adorning him like a forest; also like a great cloud, able to thunder forth the dharma and awaken every kind of being; also like empty space, manifesting every kind of dharma-gate like constellations of stars; like Mount Sumeru, its four colors universally reflected in the ocean of every being's own mind; and also like an island of jewels, filled entirely with every kind of jewel of wisdom.
二十八種大人之相 — the twenty-eight marks of a great being. Where most descriptions of a buddha's own body in this sūtra name the standard thirty-two marks, the Chinese source gives this king twenty-eight — a small but deliberate variation, keeping his splendor visibly short of a buddha's own, however dazzling the nine similes that follow.
Part 1021 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-six. Part 1022 turns to the treasures piled before the king's own throne, and the twenty billion bodhisattvas stationed at every crossroads, distributing them to beings for twelve distinct reasons.
