Every Heart Stilled at Once
Compassion for a land given over to the five turbidities leads King Great Light into a single samādhi — and the moment he enters it, fear, hatred, enmity, and quarreling vanish from every being at once, while the entire natural world turns to bow before him.
A Samādhi That Accords With the World
Where King Never Satisfied used illusion to frighten evildoers into change, King Great Light's own method needs no illusion at all — only a single samādhi of great loving-kindness, entered once, that extinguishes fear and enmity in every being simultaneously.
「善男子！此國土中一切眾生，五濁世時樂作諸惡。我心哀愍而欲救護，入於菩薩大慈為首隨順世間三昧之門。入此三昧時，彼諸眾生所有怖畏心、惱害心、怨敵心、諍論心，如是諸心，悉自消滅。何以故？入於菩薩大慈為首順世三昧，法如是故。善男子！且待須臾，自當現見。」
"Good son, all the beings within this land, in this age of the five turbidities, delight in committing every kind of evil. My own mind feels compassion for them and wishes to rescue and protect them, and so I enter the bodhisattva's own liberation-gate of the samādhi that takes great loving-kindness as its head and accords with the world. When I enter this samādhi, every fearful mind, every harmful mind, every mind of enmity, and every quarrelsome mind among those beings is entirely extinguished of itself. Why is this? Because entering the bodhisattva's own samādhi that takes great loving-kindness as its head and accords with the world, the dharma is simply so. Good son, wait just a moment, and you shall see for yourself."
The Whole World Bows
The instant King Great Light enters his samādhi, the response is total — the city itself trembles and sings, every inhabitant prostrates, and the natural world down to birds, beasts, mountains, and rivers turns to face him in reverence.
時，大光王即入此定。其城內外六種震動，諸寶地、寶牆、寶堂、寶殿、臺觀、樓閣、階砌、戶牖，如是一切咸出妙音，悉向於王曲躬敬禮。妙光城內所有居人，靡不同時歡喜踊躍，俱向王所舉身投地。村營、城邑一切人眾，咸來見王，歡喜敬禮。近王所住，鳥獸之屬，互相瞻視，起慈悲心，咸向王前恭敬禮拜。一切山原及諸草樹，莫不迴轉向王敬禮。陂池、泉井及以河海，悉皆騰溢，流注王前。
At that time, King Great Light entered this concentration at once. The city, within and without, trembled in six ways; every jeweled ground, jeweled wall, jeweled hall, jeweled palace, terrace, tower, stairway, and door — all of it gave forth wondrous sound, and all bowed toward the king in reverence. Every inhabitant within Wondrous Light city, without exception, at the same moment felt joy and leapt for delight, and together prostrated their entire bodies toward where the king was. Every person in every village, camp, and city all came to see the king, joyful and reverent. Near where the king dwelt, birds and beasts of every kind looked upon one another, gave rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and all bowed in reverence before the king. Every mountain and plain, and every plant and tree, without exception, turned to face the king in reverence. Every pond, spring, well, river, and sea surged and overflowed, flowing to pour out before the king.
鳥獸之屬，互相瞻視，起慈悲心 — birds and beasts of every kind looked upon one another, gave rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion. The king's own samādhi does not simply calm beings toward him — it turns predator and prey toward each other with the same compassion, a detail suggesting the stilling reaches all the way down to the most basic fear a living creature can hold.
