Even the Flesh-Eating Kings Bow
The king's samādhi ripples outward from nāgas and heavenly kings to the elephant-king Airāvata, and finally reaches the beings this pilgrimage has never redeemed before — rākṣasa, yakṣa, kumbhāṇḍa, and piśāca kings who drink blood and devour flesh, transformed all at once into beings of loving-kindness.
Nāgas, Heavenly Kings, and Airāvata
The sky itself becomes an offering — nāga kings raise fragrant clouds, ten thousand heavenly kings fill the air with music, and the great elephant-king Airāvata spreads out lotus thrones and ornaments formed entirely of jewels.
Ten thousand nāga kings raised great clouds of fragrance, flashing lightning and rolling thunder, and let fall a fine rain. There were ten thousand heavenly kings, namely: the king of the Trāyastriṃśa heaven, the king of the Yāma heaven, the king of the Tuṣita heaven, the king of the Nirmāṇarati heaven, the king of the Paranirmita-vaśavartin heaven... and others such as these as their foremost, making every kind of music in the open sky. Countless heavenly maidens sang songs of praise, and rained down countless clouds of flowers, countless clouds of fragrance, countless clouds of jeweled garlands, countless clouds of jeweled garments, countless clouds of jeweled canopies, countless clouds of jeweled banners, and countless clouds of jeweled pennants, adorning the open sky and making offerings to the king. The great elephant-king Airāvata, through his own sovereign power, spread out countless great jeweled lotus flowers in the open sky, and let hang down countless jeweled necklaces, countless jeweled silken sashes, countless jeweled garlands, countless jeweled ornaments, countless jeweled flowers, and countless jeweled incenses, adorned throughout with every kind of marvel, while countless serving maidens sang every kind of song of praise.
Blood-Drinking Kings, Transformed
The samādhi's reach goes furthest here — beings whose very nature is to drink blood and devour flesh give rise to loving-kindness and bow before the king, and the text insists the same transformation occurs across every world without exception.
Within Jambudvīpa there were, further, measureless hundreds of thousands of millions of rākṣasa kings, yakṣa kings, kumbhāṇḍa kings, and piśāca kings, some dwelling in the great ocean, some dwelling on land, who drink blood and devour flesh, harming and killing beings; all of them gave rise to a mind of loving-kindness, resolved to act for the benefit of others, clearly recognized the world to come, and ceased committing any evil; and with reverence, they joined their palms and bowed their heads to the king. Just as in Jambudvīpa, so too in the remaining three continents, and throughout the great trichiliocosm, and throughout hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas of worlds in the ten directions — every venomous and evil being everywhere was transformed in just the same way.
飲血噉肉,殘害眾生 — who drink blood and devour flesh, harming and killing beings. This pilgrimage has shown loving-kindness overcoming fear, hatred, and enmity before, but never quite this literally — beings defined by their own predation, transformed not into gentler versions of themselves but into beings who recognize the world to come and simply stop.
