Two Further Tens That Please Every Buddha
Dharma Wisdom continues with two more lists of ten dharmas that cause every buddha to rejoice — the first built from qualities of practice, the second entirely a list of things a bodhisattva abides settled within, from non-negligence to a wisdom that sees every dharma as empty space.
The First Ten: Diligence, Patience, and a Mind That Leans on Nothing
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has, moreover, ten further dharmas that are able to cause every buddha to rejoice. What are the ten? First, diligence that never turns back. Second, never begrudging their own body or life. Third, seeking nothing at all in the way of gain or offerings. Fourth, knowing that every dharma is just like empty space. Fifth, skillfully able to contemplate, universally entering the Dharma-realm. Sixth, knowing the seal of every dharma, their mind leaning on nothing at all. Seventh, forever giving rise to great vows. Eighth, accomplishing the pure light of patience and wisdom. Ninth, contemplating their own wholesome dharmas with a mind that neither increases nor diminishes them. Tenth, relying on the gate of non-action, cultivating every pure practice. Son of the Buddha, these are the ten dharmas a bodhisattva abides in that are able to cause every Tathāgata to rejoice."
The Second Ten: Abiding Settled
"Son of the Buddha! There are, moreover, ten further dharmas that are able to cause every buddha to rejoice. What are the ten? Namely: abiding settled in non-negligence; abiding settled in the patient acceptance of the unborn; abiding settled in great loving-kindness; abiding settled in great compassion; abiding settled in the fulfillment of every perfection; abiding settled in every practice; abiding settled in great vows; abiding settled in skillful means; abiding settled in courageous power; and abiding settled in wisdom, contemplating that every dharma dwells upon nothing at all, just like empty space. Son of the Buddha, if bodhisattvas abide in these ten dharmas, they are able to cause every buddha to rejoice."
The second list's every item begins with the same word, 安住, "abiding settled" — a repeated formula that turns the list itself into something closer to a recitation than an inventory. It is worth noticing what closes it: after loving-kindness, compassion, vows, and skillful means, the very last item is a wisdom that sees every dharma as resting on nothing at all, exactly like empty space. The chapter keeps returning to this pairing — vigorous, specific practice on one side, and a mind that clings to none of it on the other.
Part 103 Complete
This closes Part 103. Chapter 18 continues in Part 104 with the ten dharmas that cause a bodhisattva to enter the grounds swiftly.
