Unrecognized in His Own City

Universal Practice reveals that his own disguise is total — moving through every clan and class of Tosala city in a form identical to whoever he is teaching, so convincingly that not one of them ever learns who he really is, before this same practice scales outward through all ninety-six heterodox groups of Jambudvīpa and beyond.

A Form No One Can Trace Back

Universal Practice's own disguise is not partial — he takes on a form identical to whoever he teaches, so completely that no being in Tosala city, however closely they listen, ever learns who he truly is or where he came from.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Moreover, good son, throughout this city of Tosala, in every place and among every clan, whether men or women, I always employ skillful means to manifest a form identical to their own, teaching them the dharma exactly as is fitting. None of these beings are ever able to know who I really am, or from where I have come — I only cause whoever hears me to practice truthfully according to reality. Good son, just as I benefit beings within this city, so too, in every city, town, and village of Jambudvīpa, wherever people dwell, I benefit them in just the same way.

Ninety-Six Groups, and Every World Beyond

The same anonymous teaching that fills a single city scales outward without limit — first to the ninety-six heterodox groups of Jambudvīpa, then to every continent, then to the entire trichiliocosm, and finally to every world throughout the ten directions.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, within Jambudvīpa there are ninety-six different groups, each giving rise to their own differing views and attachments — I tame them all through skillful means, causing them to abandon every one of their views; and just as in Jambudvīpa, so too in the remaining continents of the four; and just as in the four continents, so too throughout the great trichiliocosm; and just as throughout the great trichiliocosm, so too throughout the ocean of beings in measureless worlds in the ten directions — in all of them, according to each being's own wish, I manifest every kind of form through every kind of skillful means and every kind of dharma-gate, teaching the dharma through every kind of speech, causing them all to gain benefit.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

閻浮提內九十六眾 — within Jambudvīpa there are ninety-six different groups. This number appears elsewhere in Buddhist literature as the traditional count of non-Buddhist schools of thought current in ancient India. Universal Practice's own claim is striking precisely because he does not exempt any of them from his teaching — every group, whatever its own view, receives the same disguised visit.

Part 1040 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-seven. Part 1041 follows Universal Practice naming his own liberation in full, before naming a twenty-second teacher and Good-Wealth's unusually detailed vow before departing.
