A Twenty-Second Teacher, an Incense-Seller
Universal Practice's own confession closes with bodhisattvas whose bodies equal every being in number, dwelling with them without attachment across the three times — before he names a twenty-second teacher, the elder Utpala-Flower, an incense-seller in the land of Vast.
One Body for Every Being
Universal Practice's own closing description pushes his liberation past mere disguise into something more radical — bodhisattvas whose own bodies equal every being in number, dwelling among them constantly without ever forming an attachment.
"Good son, I only know this bodhisattva practice of reaching every place. As for the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas — their own bodies equal in number to every being, they attain a body no different from any being's own, universally entering every destiny of existence through transformation-bodies, manifesting their own taking of birth everywhere, universally appearing before every being, their own pure light illuminating the world throughout, abiding through every kalpa with unobstructed vows, attaining every incomparable practice like Indra's own net, constantly and diligently benefiting every being, forever dwelling together with them without attachment, universally equal throughout the three times, illuminating everywhere with the wisdom of no-self, and contemplating everything through the treasury of great compassion; how could I possibly know or speak of their own meritorious practice?
身與一切眾生數等 — their own bodies equal in number to every being. Where earlier in this Part Universal Practice described taking on one convincing disguise at a time, this closing line describes something more total — as many bodhisattva bodies as there are beings in existence, each one indistinguishable from the being it dwells beside.
A Twenty-Second Teacher
As with every teacher before him, Universal Practice's own confession opens directly onto the next name — an elder this time, one who deals in incense rather than dharma-teaching on the surface, in a land named simply Vast.
"Good son, to the south of here, there is a land named Vast; there is an incense-selling elder there, named Utpala-Flower. You should go to him and ask: how does a bodhisattva learn the bodhisattva practices, and cultivate the bodhisattva path?" At that time, Good-Wealth bowed his head at his feet, circumambulated him countless times, gazed up at him with deep reverence, and took his leave and departed.
Part 1041 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-seven. Part 1042 follows Good-Wealth's own unusually detailed vow before departing, naming ten specific things he wishes for above all else, before he reaches the land of Vast and states his purpose to the elder Utpala-Flower in even greater detail.
