A Master of Every Incense
Utpala-Flower's own answer opens with the full scope of his mastery — every kind of incense belonging to every being from devas to humans, and incenses whose function ranges from curing disease to marking the bodhisattva grounds themselves.
Every Kind of Incense, Every Being's Own
Utpala-Flower's own claim begins with the basic categories of incense before widening to every being capable of producing or using one — devas, nāgas, yakṣas, and every other kind of being down to humans themselves.
The elder said: "Excellent! Excellent! Good son, you have indeed been able to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Good son, I skillfully distinguish and know every kind of incense, and I also know how to blend every method of incense, namely: every incense, every burning incense, every anointing incense, and every powdered incense. I also know the places from which every king of incense such as these emerges, and I also skillfully understand every kind of incense belonging to devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans.
Incenses That Cure, Incenses That Mark the Path
The elder's own catalogue then turns from origin to function — incenses that heal disease and cast off arrogance sit beside incenses reserved for the noble ones and for the bodhisattva grounds themselves, a full range from the ordinary to the exalted.
I also skillfully distinguish incense that cures every disease, incense that cuts off every evil, incense that gives rise to joy, incense that increases affliction, incense that extinguishes affliction, incense that causes attachment to conditioned existence to arise, incense that causes aversion to conditioned existence to arise, incense that casts off every arrogance and indulgence, incense that gives rise to mindfulness of the buddha, incense that realizes understanding of the dharma-gate, incense enjoyed by the noble ones, every kind of distinguishing incense of the bodhisattvas, and every incense of the bodhisattva grounds, and as for the arising of the form and mark of incenses such as these, their manifestation and accomplishment, their purity and peace, their skillful-means domain, their majestic function, and their very root — all of this I have thoroughly mastered.
增煩惱香、滅煩惱香 — incense that increases affliction, incense that extinguishes affliction. Utpala-Flower's own catalogue is unusual for including opposites side by side without comment — an incense that increases affliction is named in the same breath as its cure, suggesting a mastery complete enough to encompass harm as well as healing.
Part 1043 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-seven. Part 1044 turns to the elder's own catalogue of named incenses one by one, beginning with a fragrance called Elephant-Treasury, born from a battle between nāgas, whose smoke turns an entire capital to gold.
