Incense Born From a Battle of Nāgas
Utpala-Flower's own catalogue of named incenses begins with wonders that read almost like fables — a fragrance born from a battle between nāgas that turns an entire royal capital to gold, sandalwood that fire cannot burn, and an incense whose mere sound scatters armies.
Elephant-Treasury, Born From a Battle
The first incense named comes from an unlikely origin — a clash between nāgas — and its effect is scaled to match, turning an entire royal capital gold and filling every being who smells it with a week of pure and untroubled joy.
「善男子！人間有香，名曰：象藏，因龍鬪生。若燒一丸，即起大香雲彌覆王都，於七日中雨細香雨。若著身者，身則金色；若著衣服、宮殿、樓閣，亦皆金色。若因風吹入宮殿中，眾生嗅者，七日七夜歡喜充滿，身心快樂，無有諸病，不相侵害，離諸憂苦，不驚不怖，不亂不恚，慈心相向，志意清淨。我知是已而為說法，令其決定發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。
"Good son, among humans there is an incense named Elephant-Treasury, born from a battle between nāgas. If a single pellet of it is burned, a great cloud of fragrance rises at once and covers the entire royal capital, raining down a fine fragrant rain for seven days. If it touches a body, that body turns golden in color; if it touches clothing, palaces, or towers, these too all turn golden. If the wind carries it into a palace, any being who smells it is filled with joy for seven days and seven nights, their body and mind at ease, free of every illness, causing no harm to one another, free of every worry and suffering, neither startled nor afraid, neither disturbed nor angry, turning toward each other with a mind of loving-kindness, their intentions pure. Knowing this, I then teach them the dharma, causing them to resolutely give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
我知是已而為說法 — knowing this, I then teach them the dharma. Every wonder Utpala-Flower describes closes the same way — the incense itself is never the point, only the occasion it creates for beings, already softened and joyful, to receive a teaching they might otherwise never have been ready to hear.
Fire That Cannot Burn, a Sound That Scatters Armies
The next two incenses reach further still — a sandalwood that makes fire powerless against the body, and an incense whose sound alone, sounded on a drum or a conch, is enough to turn back an entire enemy army.
「善男子！摩羅耶山出栴檀香，名曰：牛頭；若以塗身，設入火坑，火不能燒。善男子！海中有香，名：無能勝；若以塗鼓及諸螺貝，其聲發時，一切敵軍皆自退散。善男子！阿那婆達多池邊出沈水香，名：蓮華藏，其香一丸如麻子大；若以燒之，香氣普熏閻浮提界，眾生聞者，離一切罪，戒品清淨。
"Good son, from Mount Malaya comes a sandalwood incense named Ox-Head; if one anoints their body with it, even if they enter a pit of fire, the fire cannot burn them. Good son, within the ocean there is an incense named Invincible; if one anoints drums and every kind of conch shell with it, when their sound is sounded, every enemy army retreats and scatters of itself. Good son, from beside Lake Anavatapta comes an aloeswood incense named Lotus-Treasury, a single pellet of which is only as large as a sesame seed; if it is burned, its fragrance universally perfumes the realm of Jambudvīpa, and any being who smells it leaves behind every offense, their moral conduct becoming pure.
