Part 1070 of the collection · Fascicle 68 of 80 · 入法界品第三十九之九 · T279

Four Arms and the Four Great Oceans

The thirtieth teacher is a city spirit, and he answers the question with his body first — four arms, the water of four oceans, a faceful of it — then with a speech about how rarely anyone gets to stand where Good-Wealth is standing, and then with mountains of gold.

Ask Anyone in the City

He does not have to be found. Everyone in Dvāravatī knows where their own spirit is, and what he is doing there.

Ru-Yi Translation

Journeying onward by stages, he arrived at that city and asked where Great God was now. The people all told him: "He is within this city, manifesting a vast and expansive body, teaching the dharma to the multitude."

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Good-Wealth came to where Great God was, bowed his head at his feet, and joining his palms before him, said this: "Noble one, I have already given rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva learns the bodhisattva practices, or how a bodhisattva cultivates the bodhisattva path. I have heard that the noble one is skillfully able to teach and instruct — please, explain it to me!"

He Washes His Face First

Before a word, three acts: the arms, the oceans, the flowers. Then a speech that says nothing about himself and everything about what Good-Wealth has managed to do.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Great God stretched out four arms at full length, took the water of the four great oceans, and washed his own face with it; then, holding golden flowers, he scattered them over Good-Wealth and said to him: "Good son, every bodhisattva is hard to get sight of and hard to get word of; only rarely do they appear in the world; among beings they are the very first; they are the puṇḍarīka flower among all people. They are a refuge for beings and a rescue for beings; they make a place of safety for every world and a great light for every world; they show the safe and right road to those who are confused. They are great guides, leading beings into the gate of the buddha-dharma; they are great generals of the dharma, skillfully able to guard the city of all-knowing wisdom.

Ru-Yi Translation

A bodhisattva is as hard to meet with as this. Only one whose body, speech and mind are without fault can afterwards come to see their form and hear their eloquence, and have them constantly present before him at all times.

長舒四手,取四大海水自洗其面 — he stretched out four arms at full length, took the water of the four great oceans, and washed his own face with it. This is the gesture of a host purifying himself before receiving a guest, performed at the scale of a god. Nothing in the text explains it and nothing needs to: a visitor has arrived whom the speaker is about to call rarer than anything in the world, and the first thing he does is make himself clean.

是諸人中芬陀利華 — they are the puṇḍarīka flower among all people. The white lotus is the sūtra's standing image for what grows out of water without being wetted by it, and here it is applied not to a buddha but to any bodhisattva at all — which, as the speaker knows, includes the boy in front of him.

唯身、語、意無過失者,然後乃得見其形像 — only one whose body, speech and mind are without fault can afterwards come to see their form. The condition is placed on the seer, not on the seen. Bodhisattvas are not hidden; they are simply invisible to anyone still at fault in the three doors of action.

Cloud-Net

The liberation is named, the question about its domain is asked, and the answer is not a description. He makes the domain appear in the street.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, I have accomplished a bodhisattva liberation named Cloud-Net." Good-Wealth said: "Noble one, what is the domain of the Cloud-Net liberation?"

爾時,大天於善財前,示現金聚、銀聚、瑠璃聚、玻瓈聚、硨磲聚、碼碯聚、大焰寶聚、離垢藏寶聚、大光明寶聚、普現十方寶聚、寶冠聚、寶印聚、寶瓔珞聚、寶璫聚、寶釧聚、寶鎖聚、珠網聚、種種摩尼寶聚、一切莊嚴具聚、如意摩尼聚,皆如大山;

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Great God manifested before Good-Wealth heaps of gold, heaps of silver, heaps of beryl, heaps of crystal, heaps of musāragalva, heaps of agate, heaps of great-flame jewels, heaps of stainless-treasury jewels, heaps of great-radiance jewels, heaps of jewels universally manifesting the ten directions, heaps of jewelled crowns, heaps of jewelled seals, heaps of jewelled necklaces, heaps of jewelled ear-pendants, heaps of jewelled bracelets, heaps of jewelled chains, heaps of pearl nets, heaps of every kind of maṇi-jewel, heaps of every adornment, and heaps of wish-fulfilling maṇi — every one of them like a great mountain.

Ru-Yi Translation

And he further manifested every flower, every garland, every fragrance, every burning incense, every paste incense, every garment, every banner and pennant, every music, and every implement for the enjoyment of the five desires — all of it piled up like mountains; and he manifested countless hundreds of thousands of millions of companies of maidens.

皆如大山 — he manifested heaps of gold, heaps of silver … every one of them like a great mountain. Twenty kinds of treasure, then flowers, incense, garments, music, and finally 五欲娛樂之具, the implements for enjoying the five desires, and companies of maidens. It is the inventory of everything a person could want, produced on the spot and piled up in view. What he intends to do with it belongs to the next part; here the sūtra simply lets the heap stand there, unexplained, immediately after a speech about how rare and pure a bodhisattva is.

雲網 — Cloud-Net. The name joins what gathers and spreads, 雲, to what catches and holds, 網. Both halves describe what he has just done with the contents of the world.

Part 1070 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-eight. Part 1071 explains the heap — Great God tells Good-Wealth to take it all and give it away, so that beings learn the dāna-pāramitā and can let go of what is hardest to let go of — and then describes the frightening shapes he shows to the greedy, the angry, and the idle.
