One Sound, Understood by Every Kind
The gāthā ends with two stanzas admitting what she cannot know, and one line of directions. Then Good-Wealth walks the few steps — and the next teacher starts working on him before he gets there.
The Gāthā Ends on What She Cannot Know
Light, transformations, and a single sound — and then, twice in a row, the same four characters: 非我所能知, not something I am able to know.
The Buddha's body is constantly radiant, equal to the dust-motes of every buddha-land; in every kind of pure color, thought after thought, it pervades the dharma-realm.
From a single pore of the Tathāgata inconceivable light is released; it universally illuminates the throngs of living beings and causes their afflictions to be extinguished.
From a single pore of the Tathāgata inexhaustible transformations are brought forth; they fill and pervade the dharma-realm and extinguish the suffering of beings.
The Buddha utters a single wondrous sound, and every kind of being is made to understand it; he rains down the vast dharma universally, causing them to give rise to the intention of awakening.
The Buddha in the past cultivated all the practices, and had already taken me up then; and so it is that I come to see the Tathāgata, manifesting universally in every buddha-land.
The buddhas who appear in the world are equal in number to beings; their every kind of liberation-domain is not something I am able to know.
All the bodhisattvas enter into a single pore of the Buddha; such a wondrous liberation as this is not something I am able to know.
Near here there is a night-spirit whose name is Joyful Eye Observing; you should go to her and ask about cultivating the bodhisattva practices.
At that time, Good-Wealth bowed his head at her feet, circled her countless times, gazed up at her with earnest devotion, took his leave, and departed.
佛演一妙音,隨類皆令解 — the Buddha utters a single wondrous sound, and every kind of being is made to understand it. 隨類, according to kind, is the whole of the claim: the sound is not translated into many, and is not multiplied. One utterance is emitted, and each kind of hearer receives it in its own kind. Ten parts ago the same teacher's prose said a bodhisattva's voice is 同, the same as, the whole ocean of what beings say.
佛昔修諸行,已曾攝受我 — the Buddha in the past cultivated all the practices, and had already taken me up then. The stanza puts her own presence here at the end of someone else's long labour. It is the same recognition she has been describing all along about beings — 知其往昔曾為善友之所攝受 — turned back on herself.
非我所能知 — repeated at the end of the eleventh and twelfth stanzas. The prose confession earlier in this fascicle was a single rhetorical question; in verse the same admission is simply stated twice, flatly, once about how many buddhas there are and once about a pore that holds every bodhisattva.
Seven Things That Come of Seeing One
He walks, and while walking he thinks — seven clauses each opening 見善知識, seeing a good spiritual friend, and the first result is simply that the mind stops scattering.
At that time, Good-Wealth revered the teaching of his good spiritual friends and practiced the words of his good spiritual friends, and this thought arose in him: "A good spiritual friend is hard to see and hard to meet. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one's mind is kept from scattering. Seeing a good spiritual friend, the mountain of obstruction is broken. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one enters the ocean of great compassion and rescues beings. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one gains the light of wisdom that universally illuminates the dharma-realm. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one is able to cultivate the whole path of all-knowing wisdom. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one is able to behold the oceans of buddhas in the ten directions. Seeing a good spiritual friend, one comes to see the buddhas turning the dharma-wheel and holds it in memory without forgetting." Having thought this, he set his intention on going to where the night-spirit Joyful Eye Observing Beings was.
見善知識,令心不散亂 — seeing a good spiritual friend, one's mind is kept from scattering. Of the seven results, this is the smallest and it comes first; the list then rises to breaking the mountain of obstruction and beholding the oceans of buddhas. The sūtra has Good-Wealth reason upward from an effect he can actually verify.
善知識者,難見難遇 — a good spiritual friend is hard to see and hard to meet. The same two phrases the city spirit Great God used of bodhisattvas in Part 1070, Here Good-Wealth says it while walking between two teachers who are a few paces apart, which is the joke the sūtra does not make: the rarity is not a matter of distance.
She Begins Before He Arrives
The thirty-fourth teacher's first act is performed on a student still on the road. Ten things are made known to him, and every one of them is about the very thing he is on his way to do.
At that time the spirit Joyful Eye sustained Good-Wealth, causing him to know that drawing near to good spiritual friends can produce every root of goodness and make it increase and ripen. That is to say: she caused him to know that drawing near to good spiritual friends can cultivate the equipment that aids the path; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can raise a valiant mind; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can accomplish deeds hard to destroy; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can attain a strength hard to subdue; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can enter boundless quarters; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can cultivate over long ages; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can carry out boundless works; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can walk measureless paths; that drawing near to good spiritual friends can attain the power of swiftness to go universally to every buddha-land; and that drawing near to good spiritual friends can, without leaving one's own place, reach everywhere throughout the ten directions.
時,喜目神加善財童子 — at that time the spirit Joyful Eye sustained Good-Wealth. 加 is the verb used throughout this sūtra for a buddha's sustaining power reaching a speaker before they speak. Here a night-spirit applies it to a boy who has not yet reached her, and what she transmits is an understanding of what teachers are for. He is being taught about teachers by a teacher, before the lesson formally begins.
能不離本處遍至十方 — can, without leaving one's own place, reach everywhere throughout the ten directions. The tenth and last item, and it directly follows the ninth, 能得速疾力普詣諸剎, the power of swiftness to go to every buddha-land. The pair restates the whole argument between Right Course's swiftness and the bodhisattvas already spread across the dharma-realm in Part 1069 — and here both are listed as fruits of the same thing, keeping company with a good teacher.
Part 1086 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-nine. Part 1087 gives Good-Wealth's own ten reflections on what drawing near to a teacher makes possible, and then his first sight of Joyful Eye Observing Beings, seated on a lotus-treasury lion seat in a buddha's own assembly, sending clouds of transformation-bodies out of every pore.
