A Strength That Cannot Be Broken
The last two clouds of the series take the two remaining perfections — power and wisdom — and define both by what they can get inside. Thirteen strengths, then ten wisdoms, and nearly every wisdom names an ocean belonging to somebody else.
Thirteen Powers
Three of the thirteen say only that the strength does not end. Four of them break something. And one is about not getting tired.
And she sent forth body-clouds equal in number to the minds of all beings, which went universally before every being and taught the bodhisattvas' powers: the power without boundary in gathering the dharmas that aid the path of all-knowing wisdom; the unbreakable power in seeking all-knowing wisdom; the power without exhaustion; the power of never turning back in cultivating the unsurpassed practice; the power without interruption; the power of being unstained by the dharmas of birth and death; the power able to break every host of Māra; the power that leaves behind every defilement of affliction; the power able to break every mountain of karmic obstruction; the power of cultivating the practice of great compassion throughout every eon without fatigue; the power of shaking every buddha-land and causing every being to give rise to delight; the power able to break every other path; and the power of turning the dharma-wheel universally throughout the world. By such skillful means she ripened them, causing beings to reach all-knowing wisdom.
無間斷力 — the power without boundary … the power without exhaustion … the power without interruption. Three of the thirteen are purely negative: they specify no capability at all, only that the strength has no edge, no bottom, and no gap. The bodhisattva's 力 is characterized first by its lack of limits and only afterwards by what it does.
住一切劫修大悲行無疲倦力 — the power of cultivating the practice of great compassion throughout every eon without fatigue. The one item whose whole content is endurance. 疲倦 is plain physical tiredness, and its absence is listed among powers that shatter mountains and break Māra's hosts — the sūtra ranks not flagging alongside not being defeated.
能破一切業障山力 — the power able to break every mountain of karmic obstruction. This is the third mountain in three consecutive parts: the mountain of views struck by the vajra of wisdom in Part 1089, the mountain of unknowing and the mountains of obstruction in Part 1088, and now karmic obstruction. The image is this fascicle's standing figure for whatever has to be removed rather than persuaded.
Ten Wisdoms, Four of Them Oceans of Beings
The wisdom cloud does not describe knowing the truth. It describes getting into four different oceans that belong to living beings — their realms, their minds, their faculties, their conduct.
And she sent forth measureless transforming form-bodies as clouds, equal in number to the minds of all beings, which went universally to the measureless worlds of the ten directions and, in accordance with beings' minds, expounded the wisdom-conduct of every bodhisattva. That is to say: they taught the wisdom that enters the ocean of every realm of beings; the wisdom that enters the ocean of every being's mind; the wisdom that enters the ocean of every being's faculties; the wisdom that enters the ocean of every being's conduct; the wisdom of delivering every being without ever missing the moment; the wisdom of sending forth the sounds of the whole dharma-realm; the wisdom that in thought after thought pervades every ocean of the dharma-realm; the wisdom that in thought after thought knows the breaking up of every ocean of worlds; the wisdom that in thought after thought knows the differences in the forming, the abiding, and the adornment of every ocean of worlds; and the wisdom that in thought after thought sovereignly draws near to and makes offerings to every tathāgata and hears and receives their dharma-wheel. Revealing the pāramitā of wisdom in this way, she caused beings to be greatly delighted, eased and gladdened, their minds pure, giving rise to settled understanding, and seeking all-knowing wisdom without ever turning back.
And just as she brought beings to ripeness by expounding the bodhisattvas' pāramitās, so she expounded every kind of practice-dharma of all the bodhisattvas, and thereby brought them benefit.
說入一切眾生行海智 — the wisdom that enters the ocean of every realm of beings … the ocean of every being's conduct. Four consecutive items, all built on 入, entering, and all with beings as their object. Wisdom here is not a view of reality but an act of entry into someone else's condition, and the fourth of them, 行海, the ocean of conduct, means knowing what people actually do.
說度一切眾生未曾失時智 — the wisdom of delivering every being without ever missing the moment. 失時, missing the right time, is the item that makes wisdom a matter of timing. Spoken by a spirit of the night hours, whose entire office is knowing which hour it is — and whose predecessor Vāsantī said in Part 1078 that she had 待時, waited for the moment, before speaking at all.
念念知一切世界海成住莊嚴差別智 — the wisdom that knows the breaking up of every ocean of worlds … and the differences in their forming, abiding, and adornment. The two are given in that order, destruction before formation, which is not the usual sequence. Set beside the four preceding wisdoms about beings, the balance of this list is exact: half of it attends to what people are, half to what worlds do.
Part 1090 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-nine. Part 1091 turns from the perfections to appearances — from every pore she sends out bodies resembling the gods of every heaven from the summit of form downward, and then gandharva, kumbhāṇḍa, nāga and yakṣa kings, kinnaras, garuḍas, asuras, King Yama, human kings, and the spirits of earth, water, fire and wind.
