The Ten Grounds in Verse, and the World Quakes

This installment completes fascicle five. The remaining seven bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who emerged from the Buddha's lion-throne each sing in turn — of his inconceivable palace, the bodhi tree beneath which he sits, his ten powers of a Tathāgata, the six pāramitās, and, in the most doctrinally dense hymn of the whole fascicle, the ten bodhisattva grounds themselves, one couplet to a ground. A final hymn surveys the different ways different beings behold the Buddha at all. Then the whole Flower-Treasury World-System quakes in six kinds and eighteen aspects, and every world-lord of every world answers with a last, unbounded offering — closing fascicle five and this remarkable, extended assembly.

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Great Wisdom-Sun's Valiant Wisdom, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"The World-Honored One, composed and radiant, dwells within the hall of the Dharma, shining brilliantly within the palace;
according to what the minds of living beings delight in, his body manifests universally throughout the lands of the ten directions.
The Tathāgata's palace is inconceivable, adorned by the treasury of maṇi jewels,
and every ornament of adornment shines forth entirely, the Buddha, seated within it, especially manifest with clarity.

Maṇi forms pillars of every color, true-gold bells and chimes spread like clouds,
jeweled staircases arrayed in rows on every side, and every gate and door, in every direction, stands open wide.
Curtains adorned with wondrous flowers and fine silk, jeweled tree-branches together adorning it,
garlands of maṇi hanging down on every side — the ocean of wisdom sits within, tranquil and still.

Nets of maṇi form banners of wondrous fragrance, light and flame, lamps bright, spreading like clouds,
covered with every kind of adorning ornament, and the one whose right knowledge transcends the world sits here.
Clouds of transformation manifest universally throughout the ten directions, and those clouds proclaim the Dharma pervading the world,
taming every living being entirely — all of this manifests from the Buddha's own palace.

Maṇi forms trees that send forth wondrous flowers, unmatched by anything that exists in the ten directions,
and the adorning work of every land of the three periods of time is reflected within it without exception.
In every place there are masses of maṇi, their flame and light blazing in every kind, immeasurable,
and every door and window opens alternately in every direction, the very beams and eaves adorned in the utmost splendor.

The Tathāgata's palace is inconceivable, its pure light endowed with every mark, and every palace is manifest within it,
each and every one having the Tathāgata seated within.
The Tathāgata's palace is without any bound, and the one naturally awakened dwells within it,
and every assembly of the ten directions comes together, gathering toward the Buddha without exception."

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of Inconceivable Merit's Jeweled Wisdom-Seal, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"The Buddha, in ages past, cultivated the whole ocean of every blessing, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in every land,
and, born of the power of spiritual transmutation and vow, the awakening-site is adorned and pure, free of every defilement.
The wish-fulfilling king of jewels forms the tree's root, vajra and maṇi form its very trunk,
a net of jewels stretches far to cover it above, and wondrous fragrance, thick and swirling, revolves around it together.

The tree's branches, adorned with every jewel, its trunk of maṇi rising up in competing splendor,
its boughs densely spread like layered clouds, and the Buddha sits at the awakening-site beneath it.
The awakening-site is vast and inconceivable, and the tree, all around it, covers it entirely;
its dense leaves and abundant flowers shade and reflect one another, and within the flowers are formed maṇi fruits entirely.

Every branch emits wondrous light between it, and that light shines universally throughout the awakening-site,
pure and blazing without end, beheld thus through the power of the Buddha's own vow.
The treasury of maṇi jewels forms its flowers, casting shadows and radiating brilliance like patterned clouds,
encircling the tree, its fragrance hanging down and pervading everywhere, universally adorning the awakening-site.

Behold the Well-Gone One's awakening-site: lotus flowers and jeweled nets are both pure entirely,
and wheels of light and flame appear from it, the sound of bells and chimes arising from among the clouds.
Every wondrous, adorning tree that exists in every land of the ten directions
is manifest entirely within the bodhi tree, and the Buddha, beneath it, is free of every defilement.

The awakening-site, vast, is formed of blessing, and the tree's branches rain down jewels forever without end,
and from within those jewels emerge bodhisattvas, all going to the ten directions to make offerings and serve every buddha.
The domain of every buddha is inconceivable, universally causing this tree to utter a joyful sound,
just as the path of bodhi was gathered in ages past, and the assembly, hearing that sound, all attain vision of it."

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Hundred-Eyed Lotus Topknot, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"Every maṇi utters a wondrous voice, proclaiming the names of every buddha of the three periods of time,
and the immeasurable, spiritually transmuted deeds of those buddhas are all manifest and beheld within this very awakening-site.
Every flower competes to bloom, spread like garlands, clouds of light streaming forth and pervading the ten directions,
and the spirit of the bodhi tree bears it toward the Buddha, gazing up with a single mind to make his offering.

The light-flame of maṇi forms banners entirely, and within those banners, blazing, wondrous fragrance is sent forth,
and that fragrance universally scents the whole assembly, and so that place is adorned and pure entirely.
Lotus flowers hang draped in golden light, and that light proclaims a cloud of the Buddha's wondrous voice,
universally shading every land of the ten directions, forever bringing the burning affliction of living beings to rest.

The royal bodhi tree's sovereign power forever emits light, utterly pure, and the assembly of the ten directions, without any bound,
is reflected entirely within this awakening-site.
The jeweled branches, their light and flame like a bright lamp, that light proclaiming a voice that expounds the great vow,
just as the Buddha, in ages past, amid every state of existence, fully expounded his own original practice.

The spirits beneath the tree, as numerous as the fine motes of dust in every land, all rely together upon this very awakening-site,
each and every one before the Tathāgata's own tree of the path, proclaiming the liberation gateway in every single thought.
The World-Honored One, in ages past, cultivated every practice, making offerings to every Tathāgata,
and his own original practice and renown are all manifest entirely within the maṇi jewels.

The whole awakening-site utters a wondrous voice, and that voice, vast, pervades the ten directions,
and if there is any living being fit to receive the Dharma, there is none who is not tamed and made pure by it.
The Tathāgata, in ages past, universally cultivated every immeasurable, adorning work,
and every bodhi tree of the ten directions is adorned, each and every one, in immeasurable kinds."

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Golden Flame's Perfect, Full Light, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"The Buddha, in ages past, cultivated the practice of bodhi, understanding every domain with total clarity,
pure and without doubt as to what is possible and what is not — this is the Tathāgata's very first power of wisdom.
Just as he once contemplated the nature of every dharma equally, understanding the whole ocean of karma with total clarity,
so now, within the net of light, he is able to fully proclaim it universally throughout the ten directions.

Across kalpas past he cultivated great skillful means, guiding and transforming beings according to their capacity,
universally causing the assembly's mind to become pure; and so the Buddha is able to accomplish the power of wisdom knowing every faculty.
Just as every living being's understanding is distinct, their desires, delights, and conduct each different,
he teaches the Dharma according to what is fitting for each — the Buddha, through the power of wisdom, is able to do just this.

Throughout the whole ocean of every land of the ten directions, and the whole realm of every living being that exists,
the Buddha's wisdom, equal and impartial like empty space, is able to reveal it all entirely within his very pores.
Every course of conduct in every place the Buddha understands entirely, the three periods of time within a single thought, complete without remainder;
the lands, kalpas, and times of living beings throughout the ten directions, he is able to reveal entirely, making them manifest.

The power of dhyāna and liberation is boundless, and the skillful means of samādhi is likewise so; the Buddha reveals it to bring joy,
universally washing away the darkness of affliction.
The Buddha's unobstructed wisdom encompasses the three periods of time, manifesting entirely within a single instant within his very pores;
the Buddha's dharma, lands, and living beings, all that is manifest arises entirely through the power of his recollection.

The Buddha's eye is vast, like empty space, universally beholding the Dharma-realm entirely, without remainder,
its unequaled function within the unobstructed ground — that immeasurable eye the Buddha is able to expound.
Every living being possessed of every fetter, and every latent tendency and habitual trace,
the Tathāgata appears throughout the world, causing all of it to be extinguished entirely through skillful means."

佛昔修行大劫海,淨治諸願波羅蜜,
是故出現遍世間,盡未來際救眾生。

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Dharma-Realm's Universal Voice, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"The Buddha's majestic, spiritual power pervades the ten directions, revealing itself vastly, without any discrimination,
and the pāramitās of the great conduct of bodhi, which he fulfilled in ages past, he causes all to see entirely.
In ages past, giving rise to great compassion for living beings, he practiced the pāramitā of generosity,
and by this his body became most excellent and wondrous, able to cause those who behold it to give rise to joy.

In ages past, throughout a boundless, great ocean of kalpas, he cultivated the pāramitā of pure moral discipline,
and so attained a pure body pervading the ten directions, universally extinguishing every heavy suffering in the world.
In ages past he practiced pure patience, his faith and understanding true, without discrimination;
and so his forms and marks are entirely perfect, universally emitting light to illumine the ten directions.

In ages past, diligently practicing across a great ocean of kalpas, he was able to turn aside the deep, heavy obstructions of living beings,
and so he is able to divide his body throughout the ten directions, manifesting entirely beneath every royal bodhi tree.
The Buddha, cultivating for a long time across immeasurable kalpas, purified the great ocean of dhyāna concentration universally;
and so he causes those who behold it to give rise to deep joy, every obstruction of affliction and defilement extinguished entirely.

The Tathāgata, in ages past, cultivated the whole ocean of every practice, fully endowed with the pāramitā of wisdom;
and so he unfurls light to illumine universally, conquering and destroying every darkness of ignorance.
Through every kind of skillful means he transforms living beings, causing what they cultivate to be entirely accomplished,
going universally throughout every direction of the ten, never resting across kalpas without limit.

The Buddha, in ages past, practiced across a great ocean of kalpas, purifying the pāramitā of every vow;
and so he appears throughout the world, rescuing living beings to the very end of the future.
The Buddha, across immeasurable kalpas, broadly cultivated the pāramitā of the power of every dharma,
and by this was able to accomplish his own natural power, manifesting universally in every land of the ten directions.

The Buddha, in ages past, cultivated the wisdom of the universal gate, the nature of omniscience like empty space itself;
and so he attained the accomplishment of unobstructed power, unfurling light to illumine every land of the ten directions universally."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The first hymn above moves through the ten powers of a Tathāgata (十力) in order — knowing what is and is not possible, karma and its ripening, every disposition and inclination of living beings, the paths that lead everywhere, dhyāna and liberation, past lives, the divine eye, and the exhaustion of every outflow — a canonical list already fixed centuries before this sūtra was translated. The second sets the six pāramitās to the same treatment, one pair of lines to each: generosity, moral discipline, patience, diligence, meditative concentration, and wisdom, each tied to a specific bodily result the Buddha is said to have attained by perfecting it. Doctrine that elsewhere fills entire treatises is compressed here into couplets meant to be sung.

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Cloud-Voice's Pure Moon, sustained by the Buddha's majestic power, universally beheld the whole ocean of the assembly at the awakening-site, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"His domain of spiritual transmutation is equal to empty space, and there is no living being of the ten directions who fails to see it;
the grounds accomplished through his practice in ages past, the maṇi fruits fully expound them all.
Purely and diligently practicing across immeasurable kalpas, he enters the first ground, of Utmost Joy,
bringing forth the vast wisdom of the Dharma-realm, universally beholding immeasurable buddhas of the ten directions.

Within every dharma, the ground Free of Defilement upholds pure moral discipline equal in number to living beings themselves,
having, across many kalpas, broadly practiced, making offerings to the boundless ocean of every buddha.
Gathering merit, the ground of Emitting Light holds the treasury of śamatha and firm patience,
and the vast cloud of the Dharma is heard entirely — thus do the maṇi fruits proclaim it.

The unequaled ground of the Ocean of Flame's Bright Wisdom skillfully understands every domain, giving rise to compassion,
its body equal throughout every land, expounding fully just as the Buddha himself cultivated.
The ground Hard to Conquer, the gateway of the Universal Treasury and its like, harmonizes movement and stillness without contradiction,
the domain of the Buddha-dharma equal entirely, able to expound it fully just as the Buddha purified it.

The ground of the Vast, Cultivated Ocean of Wisdom understands every Dharma-gateway thoroughly and entirely,
manifesting universally in lands like empty space, and this very voice of the Dharma is expounded fully within the tree.
The body pervading the Dharma-realm and the realm of space universally illumines the lamp of wisdom for living beings,
and every skillful means is entirely pure, the Far-Reaching journey of ages past fully expounded.

Adorned by every vow and practice, the immeasurable ocean of lands is entirely pure, and no discrimination whatsoever is able to move it —
this Unequaled, Unmoving ground proclaims it fully.
The power of spiritual transmutation across immeasurable domains, skillfully entering the power of the teaching's light —
this is the pure ground of Wholesome Wisdom, the conduct of an ocean of kalpas fully revealed.

The vast, tenth ground of the Cloud of Dharma contains and holds everything, pervading the whole of space,
and the domain of every buddha is proclaimed within this very voice — this voice is the Buddha's own majestic, spiritual power."

At that time, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva of the Excellent, Valiant Light-Banner, sustained by the Buddha's majestic spirit, contemplated the ten directions, and then spoke a verse, saying:

"Immeasurable living beings dwell within the assembly, their every kind of faith and understanding pure in mind,
all able to awaken to and enter the Tathāgata's wisdom, thoroughly understanding every adorning domain.
Each having given rise to a pure vow to cultivate every practice, all having once made offerings to immeasurable buddhas,
they are able to behold the Tathāgata's true body, and every spiritual transformation as well.

Some are able to see the Buddha's Dharma-body, unequaled, unobstructed, universally pervading everything,
and every boundless nature of every dharma enters entirely into that very body, without exception.
Some see the Buddha's wondrous form-body, its boundless forms and marks blazing with light,
and, according to each living being's own distinct understanding, it transforms and manifests in every kind throughout the ten directions.

Some see the unobstructed body of wisdom, equal across the three periods of time, like empty space itself,
turning universally according to what living beings' minds delight in, causing every kind of distinction to be seen.
Some are able to understand the Buddha's voice, pervading every land of the ten directions universally,
and, according to what each living being should understand, he utters speech and sound without any obstruction.

Some see the Tathāgata's light of every kind, shining forth in every way, pervading the world;
and some, within the Buddha's own light, further see every buddha manifesting spiritual transmutation.
Some see the Buddha's ocean-cloud light, blazing forth in color from his very pores,
revealing the path of practice cultivated in ages past, causing profound faith to arise and entering the Buddha's own wisdom.

Some see the Buddha's marks, adorned by blessing, and also see from what that blessing arose —
the whole ocean of every pāramitā practiced in ages past is all beheld with total clarity within the Buddha's very marks.
The Tathāgata's merit cannot be measured, filling the Dharma-realm entirely, without any bound,
and every domain of spiritual transmutation as well — it is through the Buddha's own power that this can be proclaimed."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The Cloud-Voice, Pure Moon Bodhisattva's hymn sets the ten bodhisattva grounds (十地) to verse, one to a couplet in order — Utmost Joy, Free of Defilement, Emitting Light, Blazing Wisdom, Hard to Conquer, Manifest, Far-Reaching, Unmoving, Wholesome Wisdom, and the Cloud of Dharma — the same ten grounds that Vasubandhu's treatise, already translated on this site in fifty-two parts, unpacks one at a time across its own vast length. Here they are compressed to a dozen lines, sung rather than analyzed, a reminder that the exhaustive commentary and the single hymn are two ways of pointing at the same territory, not two different territories. The closing hymn, on how different beings behold the Buddha differently — some his Dharma-body, some his form, some only his voice — anticipates a theme fascicle six will develop as its own chapter.

At that time, the whole ocean of the Flower-Treasury Adorned World-System, through the Buddha's spiritual power, had its every ground shaken in six kinds and eighteen aspects. These were: moving, moving everywhere, moving universally everywhere; rising, rising everywhere, rising universally everywhere; surging, surging everywhere, surging universally everywhere; quaking, quaking everywhere, quaking universally everywhere; roaring, roaring everywhere, roaring universally everywhere; and resounding, resounding everywhere, resounding universally everywhere. Every one of these world-lords manifested inconceivable clouds of offering, raining them down upon the ocean of the assembly at the Tathāgata's awakening-site. These were: a cloud of every fragrant flower's adornment, a cloud of every maṇi's wondrous ornament, a cloud of every jeweled flame's flower-net, a cloud of the perfect light of maṇi jewels of boundless kinds, a cloud of the treasury of true pearls of every color and jewel, a cloud of the fragrance of every jeweled sandalwood, a cloud of every jeweled canopy, a cloud of the sovereign maṇi of pure, wondrous sound, a cloud of the wheel of sun-light maṇi garlands, a cloud of the treasury of every jewel's light, and a cloud of every distinct ornament of adornment — clouds of offering such as these, their number immeasurable and inconceivable. Every one of these world-lords manifested clouds of offering such as these, raining them down upon the ocean of the assembly at the Tathāgata's awakening-site, reaching everywhere without exception. Within this very world, every single world-lord gave rise to a joyful mind, and made offerings thus; and throughout the whole ocean of the Flower-Treasury Adorned World-System, every world-lord of every world made offerings in just the same way. Within every world there is a Tathāgata seated at the awakening-site; and every single world-lord, each with their own faith and understanding, each with their own object of contemplation, each with their own gateway of samādhi and skillful means, each cultivating their own practice that assists the path, each with their own accomplishment, each with their own joy, each entering in their own way, each awakening to and understanding every Dharma-gateway in their own way, each entering the Tathāgata's own domain of spiritual transmutation, each entering the Tathāgata's own domain of power, and each entering the Tathāgata's own liberation gateway. Just as it is within this Flower-Treasury World-System Ocean, so it is throughout the ten directions, the whole Dharma-realm, the realm of space, and every ocean of world-systems as well.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The earthquake in "six kinds and eighteen aspects" (六種、十八相) is a fixed formula appearing at pivotal turns throughout Mahāyāna sūtras, traditionally read as marking the ground itself responding to something momentous — here, the close of the entire assembly-gathering that opened this sūtra. Note the final claim: not simply that other world-lords elsewhere also make offerings, but that every single one does so through their own distinct faith, their own object of contemplation, their own gateway of practice — the sūtra insisting, one last time before moving on, that the uniformity of the pattern (every class named, every class given a liberation gateway, every class singing praise) never collapsed the individuality of any single being within it. This closes fascicle five and the whole extended assembly of "the Wondrous Adornment of the World-Lords" that has run since the opening line of fascicle one. Fascicle six turns to a new chapter.

Part 11 Complete — Fascicle Five Complete

This closes Part 11 and fascicle five: the remaining bodhisattvas born from the Buddha's lion-throne singing of his inconceivable palace, the bodhi tree, his ten powers, the six pāramitās, and the ten bodhisattva grounds in verse, followed by a final hymn on the many ways living beings behold the Buddha at all. The whole Flower-Treasury World-System then quakes in six kinds and eighteen aspects, and every world-lord of every world answers with one last, boundless offering — closing not only fascicle five but the entire assembly-gathering that has run continuously since the opening line of fascicle one: five fascicles, thirty-nine classes of world-lord, and the whole bodhisattva assembly, each now speaking in their own voice. Fascicle six turns to a new chapter of the sūtra.
