A Chain That Understands Itself Downward
Having gained the gate a second time, she describes what it opened onto — a mote of dust holding buddha-lands beyond counting, each one holding Vairocana, and then a chain of understanding that runs from one dharma-gate down through nine more links to an ocean of buddhas actually seen.
Vairocana Inside Every Mote of Dust
Part 1128 ended with her regaining, at this very awakening-site, the gate named Bringing Forth Vast Joy. Here is what that regaining actually let her see.
"Having attained this liberation, I was able to enter oceans of the establishment of the dharma-realm as numerous as ten ineffably ineffable fine motes of dust of buddha-lands. I saw that within every mote of dust of every buddha-land in all those oceans of the establishment of the dharma-realm, there were buddha-lands as numerous as ten ineffably ineffable fine motes of dust of buddha-lands. In each single one of those buddha-lands sat the Tathāgata Vairocana at his awakening-site, in thought after thought accomplishing perfect awakening and displaying spiritual transformations; and each single one of those displayed transformations pervaded the whole ocean of the dharma-realm.
I also saw my own body present at the place of every one of those tathāgatas, and I heard too the wondrous dharma they spoke; and I saw as well that from each single pore of every one of those buddhas there came forth an ocean of transformations, displaying spiritual power, and that in every ocean of the dharma-realm, every ocean of worlds, every world-seed, and every world, they turned the true dharma-wheel in accord with the minds of beings.
十不可說不可說佛剎微塵數 — ten ineffably ineffable fine motes of dust of buddha-lands. This measure occurs twice in one sentence, once for the oceans she enters and once for the buddha-lands inside each mote of dust within them. The count nests inside itself: an unspeakable number of unspeakable numbers, of dust, inside dust. Nothing in fascicle seventy-one has used a larger unit, and it arrives at the exact moment she describes regaining her own gate — as though the size of the vision were proportional to how personal the moment was.
亦見自身在彼一切諸如來所 — I also saw my own body present at the place of every one of those tathāgatas. Part 1111 gave this same construction to the king's daughter in fascicle seventy, who saw 自身在其身內, her own body inside Samantabhadra's. Here the night-spirit sees her own body at the place of every buddha in every land inside every mote of dust. The vision that once needed a canopy made of scattered jewellery to open now simply happens, because she is the one holding the gate rather than the one being shown it.
Four Wisdoms
Then the gift turns from seeing to knowing. She names a power and four kinds of wisdom, each with its own reach.
I obtained the power of swift dhāraṇī, upholding and contemplating the meaning of every word; by clear wisdom I entered universally into every pure dharma-treasury; by wisdom of sovereign freedom I roamed universally through every profound ocean of dharma; by all-pervading wisdom I knew universally every vast meaning of the three times; and by the wisdom of equality I fully understood the undifferentiated dharma of all buddhas.
Four wisdoms are named — 明了, 自在, 周遍, 平等: clear, sovereign, all-pervading, equal — and each governs a different kind of object: a treasury one enters, an ocean one roams, a meaning one knows across the three times, and a dharma one understands as undifferentiated. The four move from a bounded thing to an unbounded one, and the sequence ends where this whole fascicle keeps ending: at the claim that, looked at closely enough, there is only one thing rather than many.
A Chain That Understands Itself Downward
Then a chain of ten links, each opening into the next by the same two characters — until it stops being about texts at all and becomes a chain of what she has actually seen.
In this way I awakened to and understood every dharma-gate; and within each single dharma-gate, I awakened to and understood every cloud of sūtras; and within each single cloud of sūtras, I awakened to and understood every ocean of dharma; and within each single ocean of dharma, I awakened to and understood every category of dharma; and within each single category of dharma, I awakened to and understood every cloud of dharma; and within each single cloud of dharma, I awakened to and understood every stream of dharma; and within each single stream of dharma, there was brought forth every ocean of great joy; and from each single ocean of great joy, there was brought forth every ground; and from each single ground, there was brought forth every ocean of samādhi; and from each single ocean of samādhi, I gained every ocean of seeing buddhas; and from each single ocean of seeing buddhas, I gained every ocean of the light of wisdom; and each single ocean of the light of wisdom shone universally through the three times and entered universally the ten directions.
Ten links, each stated as Y — within or from each single X, Y is understood or brought forth or gained. The verb changes twice along the way: the first six links all use 悟解, awaken to and understand, moving through gates, sūtra-clouds, dharma-oceans, dharma-categories, dharma-clouds and dharma-streams — every link still a kind of text or teaching. At the seventh the verb becomes 出生, bring forth, and the object stops being textual: an ocean of great joy, a ground, an ocean of samādhi. At the ninth it becomes 得, gain: an ocean of seeing buddhas, an ocean of the light of wisdom. The chain begins in scripture and ends in vision, and the sūtra marks the change by changing what a link is allowed to produce.
一一法流中,出生一切大喜海 — from each single stream of dharma, there was brought forth every ocean of great joy. This is the hinge of the whole chain, and 大喜, great joy, is the name her gate has carried since Part 1120: 念念出生廣大喜莊嚴, Bringing Forth Vast Joy and Adornment in Thought After Thought. The chain does not merely lead toward her liberation as a destination; at its exact midpoint, the liberation's own name is the thing produced, and everything after it — grounds, samādhis, seeing buddhas, the light of wisdom — follows from that joy rather than toward it.
Part 1129 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-one. Part 1130 gives what all that knowing amounted to — thirty clauses of 知無量如來, I know innumerable tathāgatas, running from the perfections she practises herself down to the marks and bodies she has seen them display.
