Thirty Things She Knows of Every Tathāgata
The chain of understanding in Part 1129 ended in an ocean of the light of wisdom. Here is what that light showed her — thirty clauses opening 知無量如來, I know innumerable tathāgatas, running from the ten perfections to the marks a buddha wears.
Ten Perfections, Twelve Clauses
The list opens with two general clauses about the past, and then runs the complete set of ten perfections — the same ten Part 1126 gave as the practice, now given as knowledge.
「知無量如來往昔諸行海;知無量如來所有本事海;知無量如來難捨能施海;知無量如來清淨戒輪海;知無量如來清淨堪忍海;知無量如來廣大精進海;知無量如來甚深禪定海;知無量如來般若波羅蜜海;知無量如來方便波羅蜜海;知無量如來願波羅蜜海;知無量如來力波羅蜜海;知無量如來智波羅蜜海;
"I know the ocean of practices of measureless tathāgatas in ages past; I know the ocean of all their past deeds; I know the ocean of what was hard to give up, which they were nonetheless able to give; I know the ocean of their pure wheel of discipline; I know the ocean of their pure forbearance; I know the ocean of their vast vigour; I know the ocean of their profound meditative concentration; I know the ocean of their perfection of wisdom; I know the ocean of their perfection of skilful means; I know the ocean of their perfection of vows; I know the ocean of their perfection of powers; I know the ocean of their perfection of knowledge;
難捨能施海 — the ocean of what was hard to give up, which they were nonetheless able to give. Placed third, ahead of the ten perfections proper, this clause is the classical account of giving at its hardest — not spare wealth but the thing a person could not bear to part with, given anyway. It functions as a kind of preface to the list that follows: before naming the perfection of giving in its technical form, the sūtra names the case that actually costs something.
般若波羅蜜海、方便波羅蜜海、願波羅蜜海、力波羅蜜海、智波羅蜜海 — the perfections of wisdom, skilful means, vows, powers and knowledge. Together with 施 giving, 戒 discipline, 堪忍 forbearance and 精進 vigour just before them, and 禪定 meditation between, this clause completes the full set of ten in their standard order, the same set Part 1126 gave as ten great treasuries one practises. There, the object was cultivation; here, the object is knowledge. She does not merely have these ten herself — she knows them in every tathāgata there has ever been.
Six Grounds
A shorter run of six, and all six use the same object — 菩薩地, the bodhisattva grounds — with only the verb changing each time.
知無量如來往昔超菩薩地;知無量如來往昔住菩薩地無量劫海,現神通力;知無量如來往昔入菩薩地;知無量如來往昔修菩薩地;知無量如來往昔治菩薩地;知無量如來往昔觀菩薩地;
I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, transcended the bodhisattva grounds; I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, abided on the bodhisattva grounds through oceans of measureless eons, displaying spiritual power; I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, entered the bodhisattva grounds; I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, cultivated the bodhisattva grounds; I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, set the bodhisattva grounds in order; I know how measureless tathāgatas, in ages past, contemplated the bodhisattva grounds;
超, 住, 入, 修, 治, 觀 — transcended, abided on, entered, cultivated, set in order, contemplated. Six different verbs applied to the same object in immediate succession, and none of the six is obviously the odd one out. A ground can be gone beyond, lived on, gone into, worked at, arranged, and looked at, and the sūtra treats all six as equally real things to have done to the same stage of the path. Only the second clause breaks the four-character rhythm to add 無量劫海,現神通力, through oceans of measureless eons, displaying spiritual power — the single ground a bodhisattva simply abides on for the longest time, and the only one that gets a duration attached to it.
Twelve More, and Then the Whole Arc
The list runs on through what a bodhisattva did, then what a buddha does now, and closes on the sentence that turns the whole list into a single claim.
I know how measureless tathāgatas, when they were formerly bodhisattvas, constantly beheld every buddha; I know how measureless tathāgatas, when they were formerly bodhisattvas, saw the whole ocean of buddhas and dwelt together with an ocean of eons; I know how measureless tathāgatas, when they were formerly bodhisattvas, with measureless bodies were born everywhere throughout an ocean of lands; I know how measureless tathāgatas, when they were formerly bodhisattvas, pervading the dharma-realm, cultivated vast practices; I know how measureless tathāgatas, when they were formerly bodhisattvas, displayed every kind of gate of skilful means, taming and bringing to ripeness all beings; I know how measureless tathāgatas sent out great light, universally illuminating every ocean of lands in the ten directions; I know how measureless tathāgatas displayed great spiritual power, appearing universally before all beings; I know the vast ground of wisdom of measureless tathāgatas; I know how measureless tathāgatas turned the wheel of the true dharma; I know how measureless tathāgatas displayed an ocean of marks; I know how measureless tathāgatas displayed an ocean of bodies; and I know the vast ocean of power of measureless tathāgatas.
彼諸如來,從初發心,乃至法滅;我於念念,悉得知見。
Of all those tathāgatas — from their first giving rise to the mind of awakening, all the way to the extinction of their dharma — in thought after thought I gained complete knowledge and sight.
從初發心,乃至法滅 — from their first giving rise to the mind of awakening, all the way to the extinction of their dharma. Thirty clauses of 知無量如來, and this final sentence is what turns them from a list into a claim: not thirty separate facts about buddhas in general, but the entire span of any one buddha's career, from the very beginning to the point at which even his teaching has faded from the world. She does not say she knows their awakenings. She says she knows the whole arc, including its ending.
Look back across all thirty clauses and a shape appears. The first twelve are things a buddha practised — giving, discipline, the perfections. The next six are things a buddha did to the grounds themselves. The remaining twelve move from what a bodhisattva did in the past (seeing buddhas, being born everywhere, teaching beings) to what that same being does now as a buddha — sending light, turning the wheel, displaying marks and bodies. The list is not a miscellany. It is one career, told three times at three different distances.
Part 1130 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-one. Part 1131 finally answers, in a plain number of eons, the question Good-Wealth asked in Part 1127 — and confirms that the world where all this began is still there today, with buddhas appearing in it without a break.
