She Answers Before He Finishes

Before she gives Good-Wealth anything he asked for, she tells him why he asked it — ten reasons he did not state himself. Then she names her gate, and the ten qualities that follow turn out to answer his hardest question directly.

Ten Reasons He Asked

She does not answer the question yet. First she tells him what was behind it — ten clauses of 汝為 or 汝欲, you did this because, naming motives Good-Wealth never spoke aloud.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time that night-spirit said to Good-Wealth: "Good son, it is because you wish to rescue and guard all beings; because you wish to adorn and purify every buddha-land; because you wish to make offerings to every tathāgata; because you wish to abide through every eon rescuing beings; because you wish to guard the seed-nature of every buddha; because you wish to enter universally into the ten directions and cultivate every practice; because you wish to enter universally into every ocean of dharma-gates; because you wish, with a mind of equality, to pervade all things; because you wish to receive universally every dharma-wheel of the buddhas; and because you wish to rain the rain of dharma universally in accord with what every being's mind delights in — it is for these reasons that you ask about the gate of practice the bodhisattvas cultivate.

汝為…故 … 問諸菩薩所修行門 — because you..., you ask about the gate of practice the bodhisattvas cultivate. The whole sentence is one long subordinate clause followed, only at the very end, by the main verb: he asks. Ten reasons are stacked up before the asking is even named, and every one of them is something Good-Wealth said nothing about in Part 1133 — he asked four practical questions about benefit and gathering and drawing near a throne. She answers with what she reads underneath those questions, which is not information he gave her but a diagnosis, the same move her whole office as a night-spirit has always made.

汝欲普隨一切眾生心之所樂雨法雨故 — because you wish to rain the rain of dharma universally in accord with what every being's mind delights in. The tenth and longest reason, and it is the one that names a method rather than a goal: not merely to help beings, but to do it shaped to what each of them already wants. It is the same principle Part 1121's thirty-seven diagnoses were built on, now stated as something she already sees Good-Wealth aiming at, before he has done a single one of those diagnoses himself.

A Gate, and Ten Qualities of a Teacher

Only now does she name her liberation. And the ten reasons attached to it are not qualities of the gate in the abstract — they are what makes someone fit to be a great teacher of the dharma.

「善男子!我得菩薩甚深自在妙音解脫,為大法師,無所罣礙,善能開示諸佛法藏故;具大誓願、大慈悲力,令一切眾生住菩提心故;能作一切利眾生事,積集善根無有休息故;為一切眾生調御之師,令一切眾生住薩婆若道故;為一切世間清淨法日,普照世間,令生善根故;

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, I have attained the bodhisattva liberation of the Profound and Sovereign Wondrous Voice. I am a great dharma-teacher, without any hindrance, because I am able to reveal and expound the dharma-treasury of every buddha; because, complete in great vows and the power of great compassion, I cause all beings to abide in the mind of awakening; because I am able to do every deed that benefits beings, accumulating roots of goodness without rest; because I am the tamer and guide of all beings, causing all beings to abide on the path of all-knowing wisdom; because I am a pure sun of dharma for every world, illuminating the world universally, causing roots of goodness to grow;

Ru-Yi Translation

because, my mind equal toward every world, I cause beings universally to increase in wholesome dharmas; because, my mind pure toward every domain, I extinguish every unwholesome deed; because, vowing to benefit all beings, my body constantly appears universally in every land; because I display every past deed and its causes and conditions, causing beings to abide securely in wholesome conduct; and because I constantly serve every good spiritual friend, so that beings may abide securely in the buddha's own teaching.

我得菩薩甚深自在妙音解脫,為大法師 — I have attained the bodhisattva liberation of the Profound and Sovereign Wondrous Voice. I am a great dharma-teacher. This is the direct answer to the fourth of Good-Wealth's four questions in Part 1133, 云何近法王位, how does one draw near to the throne of a dharma-king. She does not describe a technique for approaching a king. She simply states what she has become — a great dharma-teacher, 大法師 — and the ten qualities that follow are not decorations on that title but its actual content.

Ten clauses, each closing 故, because, and every one names a reason she is unobstructed as a teacher rather than a property of the liberation itself. The first is about knowledge — revealing the dharma-treasury; the next few are about beings' welfare — vows, compassion, the tireless accumulation of good; the middle turns to being a light and a guide; the last few return to her own conduct — an equal mind, a pure mind, a body appearing everywhere, and finally, closing the list, 恒事一切諸善知識, constantly serving every good spiritual friend. The great teacher's own qualifications end with her still being somebody's student.

恒事一切諸善知識,為令眾生安住佛教故 — I constantly serve every good spiritual friend, so that beings may abide securely in the buddha's own teaching. The tenth and final quality of a great dharma-teacher is not a teaching she gives but a service she performs, upward rather than downward. A night-spirit whose title in this fascicle has been 大法師, great dharma-teacher, closes her own list of qualifications by naming her own continuing discipleship.

Part 1134 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-one. Part 1135 has her explain what this teaching actually gives beings — a mind like vajra, the ability to see through Māra's own kingdom, and the beginning of ten kinds of contemplation of the dharma-realm.
