Forty-Two Things Held in Common
Good-Wealth's ten minds toward the night-spirit are met with a list far longer than his own — the same mindfulness, the same wisdom, the same fearlessness, each one shared not with him but with every bodhisattva everywhere, running here to forty-two items before it is even half finished.
Fourteen Qualities of Mind
The list opens with a single sentence naming what the night-spirit now holds in common with countless bodhisattvas, and runs, without pause, through fourteen qualities of mind and realization before it even slows down.
發是心已,得彼夜神與諸菩薩佛剎微塵數同行。所謂:同念,心常憶念十方三世一切佛故;同慧,分別決了一切法海差別門故;同趣,能轉一切諸佛如來妙法輪故;同覺,以等空智普入一切三世間故;同根,成就菩薩清淨光明智慧根故;同心,善能修習無礙功德,莊嚴一切菩薩道故;同境,普照諸佛所行境故;同證,得一切智照實相海淨光明故;同義,能以智慧了一切法真實性故;同勇猛,能壞一切障礙山故;同色身,隨眾生心示現身故;同力,求一切智不退轉故;同無畏,其心清淨如虛空故;同精進,於無量劫行菩薩行無懈倦故;
Having given rise to these minds, Good-Wealth came to share, with that night-spirit and with bodhisattvas as many as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-land, practices held in common. Namely: the same mindfulness, because her mind constantly calls to mind every buddha of the ten directions and the three times; the same wisdom, because she distinguishes and resolves every gate of distinction within the ocean of dharmas; the same destination, because she is able to turn the wondrous dharma-wheel of every buddha and tathāgata; the same awakening, because with wisdom equal to space she universally enters every world of the three times; the same faculty, because she has accomplished the bodhisattva's pure and radiant faculty of wisdom; the same mind, because she is skilfully able to cultivate unobstructed merit, adorning every bodhisattva path; the same domain, because she universally illuminates the domain in which every buddha moves; the same realisation, because she has attained the pure and radiant light of all-knowing wisdom that illuminates the ocean of true reality; the same meaning, because with wisdom she understands the true nature of every dharma; the same courage, because she is able to destroy the mountain of every hindrance; the same form-body, because she manifests a body according to the minds of beings; the same power, because she seeks all-knowing wisdom without ever retreating; the same fearlessness, because her mind is pure like empty space; the same vigour, because throughout measureless kalpas she practises the bodhisattva path without ever growing weary;
得彼夜神與諸菩薩佛剎微塵數同行 — came to share, with that night-spirit and with bodhisattvas as many as the fine motes of dust in a buddha-land, practices held in common. Good-Wealth's own ten minds, given at the close of Part 1161, are never referred back to directly — the text moves straight from what he felt to what he now shares, as though the ten minds were themselves the mechanism that produced this sharing rather than a step that needs to be credited by name. What he gains is not described as a gift from the night-spirit to him; it is described as something he now holds in common with her and with an entire order of magnitude of other beings at once.
Fourteen More, Including a Threefold Karma
The list continues through voice, virtue, and finally the three classical channels of action — body, speech, and mind — named in a row for the first time here.
同辯才,得法無礙智光明故;同無等,身相清淨超世間故;同愛語,令一切眾生皆歡喜故;同妙音,普演一切法門海故;同滿音,一切眾生隨類解故;同淨德,修習如來淨功德故;同智地,一切佛所受法輪故;同梵行,安住一切佛境界故;同大慈,念念普覆一切國土眾生海故;同大悲,普雨法雨潤澤一切諸眾生故;同身業,以方便行教化一切諸眾生故;同語業,以隨類音演說一切諸法門故;同意業,普攝眾生置一切智境界中故;同莊嚴,嚴淨一切諸佛剎故;
The same eloquence, because she has attained the unobstructed light of the wisdom of the dharma; the same peerlessness, because her bodily form is pure, surpassing the world; the same loving speech, because she causes every being to rejoice; the same wondrous voice, because she universally proclaims the ocean of every dharma-gate; the same complete voice, because every being, each according to its own kind, understands it; the same pure virtue, because she cultivates the tathāgata's own pure merit; the same ground of wisdom, because she has received the dharma-wheel at the place of every buddha; the same pure conduct, because she abides securely in the domain of every buddha; the same great loving-kindness, because in thought after thought she universally covers the ocean of beings in every land; the same great compassion, because she universally rains down the rain of dharma, moistening every being; the same bodily karma, because through skilful conduct she teaches and transforms every being; the same verbal karma, because with a voice suited to every kind she proclaims every dharma-gate; the same mental karma, because she universally gathers in beings and places them within the domain of all-knowing wisdom; the same adornment, because she adorns and purifies every buddha-land;
同身業⋯⋯同語業⋯⋯同意業 — the same bodily karma⋯⋯the same verbal karma⋯⋯the same mental karma. Of the twenty-eight items named so far, these three alone form a recognisable classical set — the three karmas of body, speech, and mind — arriving together and in this exact order, with nothing else in the surrounding list grouped so tightly. Everywhere else the list moves associatively, one quality suggesting the next; here, for three items only, it borrows a fixed doctrinal triad wholesale.
Fourteen More Still — Entry, Retinue, Excellence
The list turns from qualities of virtue toward qualities of practice — drawing near, entreating, entering, until it names an excellence that admits no comparison.
同親近,有佛出世皆親近故;同勸請,請一切佛轉法輪故;同供養,常樂供養一切佛故;同教化,調伏一切諸眾生故;同光明,照了一切諸法門故;同三昧,普知一切眾生心故;同充遍,以自在力充滿一切諸佛剎海修諸行故;同住處,住諸菩薩大神通故;同眷屬,一切菩薩共止住故;同入處,普入世界微細處故;同心慮,普知一切諸佛剎故;同往詣,普入一切佛剎海故;同方便,悉現一切諸佛剎故;同超勝,於諸佛剎皆無比故;
The same drawing-near, because whenever a buddha appears in the world she draws near to him; the same entreaty, because she entreats every buddha to turn the dharma-wheel; the same offering, because she constantly delights in making offerings to every buddha; the same teaching, because she tames and subdues every being; the same light, because she illuminates and fully understands every dharma-gate; the same samādhi, because she universally knows the minds of every being; the same pervasion, because with sovereign power she fills the ocean of every buddha-land, cultivating every practice; the same dwelling-place, because she abides in every bodhisattva's great spiritual power; the same retinue, because she dwells together with every bodhisattva; the same place of entry, because she universally enters the most subtle places of every world; the same consideration of mind, because she universally knows every buddha-land; the same going-forth, because she universally enters the ocean of every buddha-land; the same skilful means, because she manifests every buddha-land entirely; the same surpassing excellence, because in every buddha-land she is without equal;
同入處⋯⋯同往詣 — the same place of entry⋯⋯the same going-forth. Both items name entering every buddha-land, phrased two different ways nine items apart in the same list — 普入世界微細處, universally entering the most subtle places of every world, and 普入一切佛剎海, universally entering the ocean of every buddha-land. This list does not appear to be organised to avoid repetition of theme; the same claim about universal entry surfaces more than once, in different words, as the enumeration continues to grow.
Part 1162 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-three. Part 1163 carries the same list through its remaining forty-two items, closing on a great trembling of every land in the ten directions, before Good-Wealth's own answering verse.
