A Million of Everything
The last two figures in the story are named — the furious king, and the household that rode with the queen to beg for the prince's life — before the prince himself goes forth from home, and in five hundred years attains a million of nearly everything a bodhisattva can attain.
Saccaka Nirgrantha, and Sixty Thousand Disciples
The reveal completes its full cast — the king who ordered his own son's death, and the household who wept and pleaded on his behalf, both given names Good-Wealth's listeners would recognise.
時勝光王，今薩遮尼乾子大論師是。時王宮人及諸眷屬，即彼尼乾六萬弟子——與師俱來，建大論幢，共佛論議，悉降伏之，授阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記者是。此諸人等，皆當作佛，國土莊嚴、劫數、名號，各各有異。
That King Victorious Light is none other than the great debater Saccaka Nirgrantha of today. And the palace women and every household member of that time are none other than the sixty thousand disciples of that very Nirgrantha teacher — those who, coming together with their teacher, shall raise a great banner of debate, contend with the Buddha in argument, and, once entirely subdued, receive the prophecy of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. All of these people, too, shall become buddhas, though their adorned lands, their kalpa-ages, and their names shall each differ.
薩遮尼乾子大論師 — the great debater Saccaka Nirgrantha. With this line, the reveal that began in Part 1173 finally closes on its last figure — every named participant in the story now has a second identity, and every one of them, without exception, is said to be heading toward buddhahood: the prince who saved them, the ministers who wanted her dead, the prisoners condemned to die, the furious king, and the household who begged for mercy. Nothing in this cast of characters was ever excluded from the ending the story was building toward.
A Million of Everything
The story leaves the palace behind and follows the prince into five hundred years of monastic life, where the number that has run through this whole fascicle as "measureless" is replaced, item after item, by an exact and repeated million.
「佛子！我於爾時救罪人已，父母聽我捨離國土、妻子、財寶，於法輪音虛空燈王佛所出家學道。五百歲中，淨修梵行，即得成就百萬陀羅尼、百萬神通、百萬法藏、百萬求一切智勇猛精進，淨治百萬堪忍門，增長百萬思惟心，成就百萬菩薩力，入百萬菩薩智門，得百萬般若波羅蜜門，見十方百萬諸佛，生百萬菩薩大願；念念中，十方各照百萬佛剎；念念中，憶念十方世界前後際劫百萬諸佛；念念中，知十方世界百萬諸佛變化海；念念中，見十方百萬世界所有眾生種種諸趣，隨業所受生時、死時、善趣、惡趣、好色、惡色，其諸眾生種種心行、種種欲樂、種種根性、種種業習、種種成就，皆悉明了。
"Child of the Buddha, after I had rescued the condemned, my parents permitted me to leave behind the kingdom, my wife and children, and all my wealth, and to go forth from home to study the path at the place of the buddha King of the Lamp of Empty Space, the Sound of the Dharma-Wheel. Throughout five hundred years, purely cultivating the conduct of purity, I thereby came to accomplish a million dhāraṇīs, a million spiritual powers, a million dharma-treasuries, a million kinds of courageous vigour in seeking all-knowing wisdom; I purified a million gates of forbearance, increased a million minds of contemplation, accomplished a million bodhisattva powers, entered a million gates of bodhisattva wisdom, and attained a million gates of the perfection of wisdom; I beheld a million buddhas in the ten directions, and gave rise to a million great bodhisattva vows. In thought after thought, I illuminated a million buddha-lands in each of the ten directions; in thought after thought, I called to mind a million buddhas throughout the kalpas past and future of the worlds of the ten directions; in thought after thought, I knew the ocean of transformations of a million buddhas throughout the worlds of the ten directions; in thought after thought, I saw, throughout a million worlds in the ten directions, every kind of destiny of every being there, and, according to their karma, the time of their birth and the time of their death, the wholesome destinies and the evil destinies, fair forms and ill forms; and I fully and clearly understood every kind of mental conduct, every kind of desire and delight, every kind of faculty and nature, every kind of habitual karma, and every kind of accomplishment among all those beings.
百萬陀羅尼⋯⋯百萬諸佛變化海 — a million dhāraṇīs⋯⋯the ocean of transformations of a million buddhas. Counted directly, 百萬, a million, opens fifteen separate clauses in this passage — eleven naming things personally attained, and four more, each marked 念念中, in thought after thought, naming what that attainment now lets her know. The first eleven are about her; the last four are about everyone else — every being's birth, death, destiny, desire, and habit, throughout a million worlds, known in full.
Part 1175 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-three. Part 1176 follows the prince through a chain of further lives — dying and returning to the very same royal family, becoming a wheel-turning king, and then, life after life, a succession of heavenly kings each drawing near to a different buddha.
