Fascicle Seventy-Three Complete

The verse retelling ends, and the night-spirit closes her whole account with a plain admission of what lies beyond her — before naming a garden-spirit waiting at Lumbinī as the fortieth teacher, and sending Good-Wealth onward as the fascicle comes to a close.

I Only Know This One Gate

The verse falls silent, and the night-spirit returns to plain speech with the same confession every teacher in this pilgrimage eventually makes.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, I only know this liberation-gate of Teaching and Transforming Beings So They Give Rise to Wholesome Roots. As for the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas — who transcend every worldly realm, manifest bodies in every destiny, do not abide in any clinging, and are free of every obstruction; who fully understand the intrinsic nature of every dharma, and are skilled in contemplating every dharma; who have attained the wisdom of no-self, and realised the dharma of no-self; who teach, transform, and tame every being without ever resting; whose minds forever abide in the dharma-gate of non-duality, and who universally enter the whole ocean of every mode of speech — how could I now possibly know or speak of their ocean of merit, their courageous wisdom, the ground of their mental conduct, the realm of their samādhi, or the power of their liberation?

我唯知此教化眾生令生善根解脫門 — I only know this liberation-gate of Teaching and Transforming Beings So They Give Rise to Wholesome Roots. This is the same name given twice already — first by the narrator in Part 1173, describing what the prince attained at the story's climax, and here, spoken by the night-spirit herself in the very words that opened her whole answer back in Part 1165. Sixteen Parts of hymn, catalogue, story, and its verse reprise all turn out to have been one gate, named identically at both ends.

Referred Onward, and the Fascicle Closes

The pilgrimage's standing gesture closes this teacher's account exactly as it has closed every other — a name for the next one, a single question, and a wordless departure.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, in this Jambudvīpa there is a garden-forest named Lumbinī; within that garden there is a spirit named Wondrous Virtue, Perfect and Full. You should go to her and ask: how does a bodhisattva cultivate the bodhisattva practices, be born into the tathāgata's own family, and become a light for the world, never growing weary even to the very end of future kalpas?" At that time, Good-Wealth bowed at her feet, circled her countless times, gazed up at her with palms joined in devotion, took his leave, and departed.

此閻浮提,有一園林,名:嵐毘尼 — in this Jambudvīpa there is a garden-forest named Lumbinī. Every teacher so far in this chapter has been a night-spirit dwelling at the bodhi-tree awakening-site itself; the fortieth teacher is the first in a long while to be found somewhere else — a named garden, rather than the assembly Good-Wealth has stood in since fascicle after fascicle began. Lumbinī needs no introduction to any reader who already knows why that name matters.

Part 1181 Complete — Fascicle Seventy-Three Complete

This closes chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-three. Part 1182 opens fascicle seventy-four with the fortieth teacher, the garden-spirit Wondrous Virtue, Perfect and Full, waiting for Good-Wealth at Lumbinī.
