Ten Birth-Treasuries

Good-Wealth leaves the night-spirit's assembly behind and searches out a garden at Lumbinī, where the fortieth teacher sits teaching twenty koṭis of nayutas of gods — and answers his standing question with the names of ten birth-treasuries that bring a bodhisattva to be born into the tathāgata's own family.

Searching Everywhere for the Spirit

Good-Wealth's search leads him away from the awakening-site entirely, to a named garden where a new teacher sits amid an assembly of gods.

At that time, Good-Wealth, having attained this bodhisattva liberation at the place of the night-spirit Power of Great Vows and Diligence Who Rescues and Protects Every Being, called it to mind and cultivated it, coming to understand and increase it fully. Travelling onward by stages, he reached the grove of Lumbinī, and searched everywhere for that spirit Wondrous Virtue, Perfect and Full. He saw her seated within a tower adorned with every kind of jewelled tree, upon a lion-seat of jewelled lotus-flowers, reverently surrounded by twenty koṭis of nayutas of gods, expounding for them the Sūtra of the Ocean of Bodhisattva Birth, causing every one of them to be born into the tathāgata's own family, and to increase the ocean of the bodhisattva's own great merit. Having seen her, Good-Wealth bowed at her feet, joined his palms, and stood before her, saying: "Great sage, I have already, before this, given rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, yet I am not yet able to know how a bodhisattva cultivates the bodhisattva practices, is born into the tathāgata's own family, and becomes a great light for the world."

周遍尋覓彼妙德神 — searched everywhere for that spirit Wondrous Virtue, Perfect and Full. Every teacher so far in this chapter has been found already in place, waiting in an assembly Good-Wealth walks straight into. This is the first time the text says he had to search — a small detail matching the larger shift already visible in where she is found: not an awakening-site, but a named garden, the first time this chapter has sent him somewhere else entirely.

Ten Birth-Treasuries

The fortieth teacher answers with a name for ten distinct treasuries, each said to bring a bodhisattva to birth in the tathāgata's own family.

That spirit answered, saying: "Good son, a bodhisattva has ten kinds of birth-treasury. If a bodhisattva accomplishes this dharma, he is thereby born into the tathāgata's own family, and, in thought after thought, increases the bodhisattva's wholesome roots — never tiring, never slackening, never wearying of it, never retreating, without interruption and without loss; he is free of every confusion, and gives rise to no mind of cowardice, weakness, distress, or regret; he advances toward all-knowing wisdom, and enters the gate of the dharma-realm; he brings forth a vast and expansive mind, and increases every pāramitā; he accomplishes every buddha's unsurpassed bodhi, abandons the destinies of the worldly realm, and enters the tathāgata's own ground; he gains supreme spiritual powers, and every buddha's dharma is forever manifest before him, in accordance with the real meaning of the domain of all-knowing wisdom. "What are these ten? First, the birth-treasury of the vow to constantly make offerings to every buddha; second, the birth-treasury of giving rise to the mind of bodhi; third, the birth-treasury of contemplating every dharma-gate and diligently cultivating it; fourth, the birth-treasury of a mind profound and pure, universally illuminating the three times; fifth, the birth-treasury of equal and universal light; sixth, the birth-treasury of being born into the tathāgata's own family; seventh, the birth-treasury of a buddha's own power and light; eighth, the birth-treasury of contemplating the gate of universal wisdom; ninth, the birth-treasury of universally manifesting adornment; and tenth, the birth-treasury of entering the tathāgata's own ground.

一者⋯⋯十者,入如來地受生藏 — first⋯⋯tenth, the birth-treasury of entering the tathāgata's own ground. Counted directly, exactly ten items are named, each one individually labelled 受生藏, birth-treasury — a term this pilgrimage has not used before. The list runs from a vow made at the very start of the path (constantly making offerings to every buddha) to the very last ground before buddhahood itself (entering the tathāgata's own ground), naming the whole span in ten titles before a single one is explained.

Part 1182 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-four. Part 1183 begins the garden-spirit's elaboration of the ten birth-treasuries, one at a time.
