Every Other Light Vanished

Māyā herself now enters the story — ten named lights mark her arrival in the grove, and, once she is seated beneath the Plakṣa tree, the first of ten spiritual marvels begins with light from every pore of her body outshining every other light in the great trichiliocosm.

Ten Named Lights

Māyā's own arrival at the grove is marked by a second list of ten — not described one by one this time, but simply named, each a distinct light.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, when Māyā left the city of Kapilavastu and entered this grove, ten kinds of luminous and auspicious sign appeared once more, causing every being to attain the light of the dharma. What were these ten? They were: the light of the treasury of every jewelled flower; the light of the treasury of every jewelled fragrance; the light of a jewelled lotus opening and giving forth a true and wondrous voice; the light of the bodhisattvas of the ten directions first giving rise to the resolve; the light of every bodhisattva entering the grounds and manifesting spiritual transformations; the light of every bodhisattva's wisdom in perfecting the pāramitās; the light of every bodhisattva's wisdom of great vows; the light of every bodhisattva's skilful wisdom in teaching and transforming beings; the light of every bodhisattva's wisdom that realises the dharma-realm's own reality; and the light of every bodhisattva attaining a buddha's own sovereign power to take birth, go forth from home, and accomplish true awakening. These ten lights universally illuminated the minds of measureless beings.

Every Other Light Vanished

A third list of ten begins — this time not signs in the grove itself, but spiritual marvels belonging to Māyā's own body, as the birth draws near.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Good son, when Māyā sat beneath the Plakṣa tree, ten kinds of spiritual marvel appeared once more, marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth. What were these ten? Good son, as the bodhisattva's birth drew near, the sons and daughters of the gods of the desire realm, and every god of the form realm, together with nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas, along with their retinues, all gathered together like clouds for the sake of making offerings. Māyā's majestic virtue was supreme beyond compare, and every pore of her body poured forth light, universally illuminating the great trichiliocosm without any obstruction, so that every other light entirely vanished, and the afflictions of every being, together with the suffering of the evil destinies, were extinguished. This was the first spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

身諸毛孔咸放光明⋯⋯一切光明悉皆不現 — every pore of her body poured forth light⋯⋯every other light entirely vanished. This is the third list of ten this account has named in close succession — first the grove's own ten signs, then ten named lights at Māyā's arrival, now ten marvels belonging to her own body. Each list narrows its focus further: from the whole grove, to her arrival, to what happens within her.
