What Is Hardest to Give Up
The spiritual marvels continue — the whole great trichiliocosm appears within Māyā's own womb, and the pores of her body become mirrors for the tathāgata's entire past: every world he lived in, every gift he made, down to his own head, eyes, and flesh, given away long before this final birth.
A Womb Containing Every World
The second marvel scales up from a single body to the whole of existence — every world, every city, every garden, and Māyā herself present in every one of them.
"Moreover, good son, at that very time, within Māyā's own womb there appeared, in full, every form and image of the great trichiliocosm; and within its hundred koṭis of Jambudvīpas, each had its own city, each had its own garden and grove, each with a different name, and in every one of them Māyā herself dwelt, surrounded by a multitude of gods — all of this manifesting the inconceivable marvellous signs of the bodhisattva's imminent birth. This was the second spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth.
Every Pore, a Mirror for the Past
Three further marvels turn from the cosmos at large to the tathāgata's own history, made visible pore by pore across Māyā's own skin.
"Moreover, good son, every pore of Māyā's own body manifested how the tathāgata, in ages past, cultivating the bodhisattva path, had reverently made offerings to every buddha, and had heard the voice of every buddha expounding the dharma. Just as a bright mirror, or the surface of water, is able to manifest the images of empty space itself — the sun, the moon, the constellations, the clouds and thunder — so too were every pore of Māyā's body able to manifest the tathāgata's own causes and conditions from ages past. This was the third spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth. "Moreover, good son, every single pore of Māyā's own body manifested, in full, the worlds the tathāgata had dwelt in while cultivating the bodhisattva's practices in ages past — the cities and towns and villages, the mountains and forests and rivers and seas, the number of kalpas beings passed through, the buddhas he encountered arising in the world, the pure lands he entered, the length of his lifespan according to wherever he took birth, his cultivation of wholesome dharmas by relying on good spiritual friends — and in every land, in every place he was born, Māyā herself was forever his mother; every one of these things, without exception, appeared within those pores. This was the fourth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth. "Moreover, good son, every single pore of Māyā's own body revealed, from wherever the tathāgata had been born while cultivating the bodhisattva's practices in ages past, his form and bodily appearance, his clothing and food and drink, matters of suffering and joy alike — each and every one of them appeared in full, clear and distinct. This was the fifth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth.
於一切剎在在生處,摩耶夫人常為其母 — in every land, in every place he was born, Māyā herself was forever his mother. The fourth marvel's claim is not that Māyā witnessed the tathāgata's past lives, but that she was present in every single one of them, in this same role. The pores revealing "every world he was born in" and "his mother in every one of them" are the same fact stated twice.
What Is Hardest to Give Up
The sixth marvel turns to the tathāgata's own past practice of giving — a plain, unflinching list of what exactly he once gave away.
"Moreover, good son, every single pore of Māyā's own body manifested how the World-Honored One, in ages past, cultivating the practice of giving, had given up what is hardest to give up — his head, his eyes, his ears, his nose, his lips, his tongue, his teeth, his body, his hands and feet, his blood and flesh and sinew and bone, his sons and daughters and wives and consorts, his cities and palaces, his clothing and jewelled ornaments, his gold and silver and every treasure. Every one of these things, inner and outer alike, could be seen, together with the form, the voice, and the very place of whoever received them. This was the sixth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's imminent birth.
捨所難捨——頭目耳鼻⋯⋯金銀寶貨 — had given up what is hardest to give up — his head, his eyes, his ears, his nose⋯⋯his gold and silver and every treasure. The list moves from the tathāgata's own body, to his family, to his kingdom, to his wealth — parts of himself before possessions, and among the possessions, people before property. Nothing on the list is described as withheld.
