A Great Lotus From the Vajra Realm

The last four marvels move outward from Māyā's own body — a grove replaying the birth of every past buddha, palaces and countless bodhisattvas emerging from her, and finally a single lotus rising from the vajra realm itself, held aloft by eight classes of kings, each marking the birth in a different way.

A Great Lotus From the Vajra Realm

The final four marvels close the list of ten, moving from the grove itself to what emerges from Māyā's own body, and finally to a single lotus that eight classes of kings gather to honour.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Moreover, good son, when Māyā entered this garden, the grove universally manifested every past buddha's own entry into his mother's womb — the lands, the gardens and groves, the clothing, the flower-garlands, the perfumes and incense powders, the banners and silken streamers, the canopies and pennants, every one of these adorned with every kind of treasure, together with music and song of the most wondrous sound, causing every being to see and hear them all. This was the seventh spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's birth. "Moreover, good son, when Māyā entered this garden, from her own body there emerged the maṇi-jewel-king palaces and towers where the bodhisattva would dwell, surpassing the dwellings of every god, nāga, yakṣa, gandharva, asura, garuḍa, kiṃnara, mahoraga, and every human king alike; covered above by jewelled nets, their every fragrance universally perfuming the air, adorned with every kind of treasure, pure within and without, each one distinct from the others without any confusion, filling the Lumbinī garden entirely, all around. This was the eighth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's birth. "Moreover, good son, when Māyā entered this garden, from her own body there emerged bodhisattvas as numerous as ten ineffable hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of the fine motes of dust in buddha-lands, and every one of those bodhisattvas' bodily forms and features, their excellent marks and light, their bearing in movement and stillness, their spiritual powers and retinues, were entirely without difference from the bodhisattva Vairocana himself, and all of them together, at the very same time, praised the tathāgata. This was the ninth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's birth. "Moreover, good son, as Māyā was about to give birth to the bodhisattva, there suddenly appeared before her, rising from the very foundation of the vajra realm, a great lotus flower named the Treasury of Every Jewelled Adornment. Its stem was of vajra, its stamens were of every treasure, and its calyx was formed of the wish-fulfilling jewel; it bore leaves as many as the fine motes of dust in ten buddha-lands, every one of them formed entirely of maṇi-jewels, covered above by jewelled nets and jewelled canopies. Every king of the gods together held it up; every king of the nāgas poured down a rain of fragrance; every king of the yakṣas reverently encircled it, scattering heavenly flowers; every king of the gandharvas gave forth a subtle and wondrous voice, singing in praise of the bodhisattva's own past merit of making offerings to every buddha; every king of the asuras cast aside every thought of pride, and bowed his head in reverence; every king of the garuḍas let hang down jewelled silken banners, filling all of empty space; every king of the kiṃnaras gazed up in joy, singing songs in praise of the bodhisattva's own merit; and every king of the mahoragas, likewise giving rise to joy, sang songs of praise, and universally rained down clouds of every kind of jewelled adornment. This was the tenth spiritual marvel marking the bodhisattva's birth.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

一切天王所共執持⋯⋯一切摩睺羅伽王皆生歡喜 — every king of the gods together held it up⋯⋯every king of the mahoragas, likewise giving rise to joy. Counted directly, all eight classes of kings named throughout this pilgrimage's standard formula — gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas — appear here in that same fixed order, each given one distinct action rather than a shared gesture: holding, raining fragrance, encircling, singing, bowing, hanging banners, gazing up, and singing again. The tenth marvel is the only one of the ten with room enough to give every class of king its own separate line.

Part 1190 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-four. Part 1191 turns from the ten marvels to the birth itself — Māyā's own account of the moment described through similes of sun, cloud, and lightning.
