Born From His Mother's Side
After ten signs and ten marvels, the birth itself arrives in four similes — sun, cloud, lightning, torch — already accompanied by a full understanding of every dharma as illusion; and the forest-spirit sees the same birth repeating in world after world before Good-Wealth finally asks how long she has held this liberation.
Born From His Mother's Side
After the ten signs and ten marvels, the birth itself is described in a single chain of similes, before the forest-spirit reveals that she sees this same birth happening everywhere, always.
"Good son, once the Lumbinī garden had manifested these ten signs, the bodhisattva's own body was then born. Just as a pure disk of the sun appears within empty space, just as an auspicious cloud rises from the summit of a high mountain, just as lightning flashes bright within a dense cloud, just as a great torch blazes within the darkness of night — at that time, the bodhisattva was born from his mother's side, and the light of his bodily form was likewise just the same. Good son, at that time, although the bodhisattva showed himself as newly born, he had already fully understood every dharma to be just like a dream, just like an illusion, just like a shadow, just like a reflected image — neither coming nor going, neither arising nor ceasing. "Good son, at the very time I beheld the buddha manifesting every kind of spiritual marvel of his own new birth here, within the Lumbinī garden of Jambudvīpa in this fourfold continent, I likewise beheld the tathāgata manifesting every kind of spiritual marvel of his own new birth within the Lumbinī garden of Jambudvīpa, in each of the hundred koṭis of fourfold continents throughout the great trichiliocosm; and I likewise beheld measureless buddha-lands within each and every mote of dust of that great trichiliocosm, and likewise beheld measureless buddha-lands within each and every mote of dust of a hundred buddha-worlds, a thousand buddha-worlds, and on up to every world throughout the ten directions — and within every one of those buddha-lands, without exception, there was a tathāgata manifesting every kind of spiritual marvel of his own taking of birth. Thus, in thought after thought, it has never once been interrupted." At that time, Good-Wealth said to that spirit: "Great heavenly one, how long have you held this liberation?" She answered, saying: "Good son,
如夢如幻,如影如像,無來無去,不生不滅 — just like a dream, just like an illusion, just like a shadow, just like a reflected image — neither coming nor going, neither arising nor ceasing. Nothing separates the account of the newborn body from this description of it as illusion — the two arrive in the very same sentence, with no interval between them at all.
