Fascicle Seventy-Four Complete
The hymn falls silent, and the forest-spirit closes her account with a plain admission of what lies beyond her — before naming a Śākya woman in Kapilavastu as the forty-first teacher, and sending Good-Wealth onward as the fascicle comes to a close.
Referred Onward, and the Fascicle Closes
The pilgrimage's standing gesture closes this teacher's account exactly as it has closed every other — a humble admission, a name for the next one, a single question, and a wordless departure.
「善男子！我唯知此菩薩於無量劫遍一切處示現受生自在解脫。如諸菩薩摩訶薩，能以一念為諸劫藏，觀一切法，以善方便而現受生；周遍供養一切諸佛，究竟通達一切佛法；於一切趣皆現受生，一切佛前坐蓮華座；知諸眾生應可度時，為現受生方便調伏；於一切剎現諸神變，猶如影像悉現其前。我當云何能知能說彼功德行？「善男子！此迦毘羅城，有釋種女，名曰：瞿波。汝詣彼問：菩薩云何於生死中教化眾生？」時，善財童子頂禮其足，遶無數匝，慇懃瞻仰，辭退而去。
"Good son, I only know this bodhisattva liberation of sovereignly manifesting birth everywhere throughout measureless kalpas. As for the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas — who are able, within a single thought, to hold the treasury of every kalpa, contemplating every dharma, and manifesting birth through skilful means; who universally make offerings to every buddha, and penetrate every buddha-dharma to its very end; who manifest birth within every destiny, and sit upon a lotus-throne before every buddha; who, knowing the moment when beings should be delivered, manifest birth as a skilful means to tame them; who manifest every spiritual transformation throughout every land, appearing before beings just like a reflected image — how could I possibly know or speak of their meritorious practice? "Good son, in this city of Kapilavastu, there is a woman of the Śākya clan, named Gopā. You should go to her and ask: how does a bodhisattva teach and transform beings within the cycle of birth and death?" At that time, Good-Wealth bowed at her feet, circled her countless times, gazed up at her with earnest devotion, took his leave, and departed.
此迦毘羅城，有釋種女，名曰：瞿波 — in this city of Kapilavastu, there is a woman of the Śākya clan, named Gopā. The referral names both a city and a teacher this pilgrimage's readers already know something about before Good-Wealth ever arrives — Kapilavastu is where the Buddha himself was raised, and the question posed to Gopā, how a bodhisattva teaches within the very cycle of birth and death, turns the pilgrimage's attention from a garden where a birth is remembered to a city where an entire family's history is bound up with it.
