Sixteen Things to Be
Good-Wealth closes his aspiration with sixteen roles a bodhisattva takes on for every being's sake, each paired with what it accomplishes — father and mother, helmsman, refuge, guide, wondrous flower, and, among them, a Samantabhadra in his own right.
Sixteen Things to Be
Good-Wealth's aspiration closes on a sustained run of sixteen roles, each one a plain metaphor paired with exactly what it does for beings.
"Noble one, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, for the sake of every being, is an adornment, causing them to be born to wealth and joy among gods and humans; is a father and mother, establishing within them the mind of bodhi; is a nurturer, causing them to accomplish the bodhisattva path; is a guardian, causing them to keep far from the three evil destinies; is a helmsman, causing them to cross the ocean of birth-and-death; is a refuge, causing them to abandon every fear of Māra's own afflictions; is an ultimate end, causing them to forever attain the bliss of coolness; is a ford and ferry, causing them to enter the ocean of every buddha; is a guide, causing them to reach the isle of every dharma-treasure; is a wondrous flower, opening and unfolding the mind of every buddha's merit; is an ornament, forever emitting the light of merit and wisdom; is a delight, since whatever he does is entirely upright and fine; is one to be revered, since he keeps far from every evil deed; is a Samantabhadra, fully endowed with a body entirely upright and fine; is a great light, forever emitting the pure radiance of wisdom; and is a great cloud, forever raining down every dharma of ambrosia. Noble one, when the bodhisattva cultivates every practice in just this way, he causes every being to give rise to love and delight, and to be fully endowed with the joy of the dharma."
為普賢,具足一切端嚴身故 — is a Samantabhadra, fully endowed with a body entirely upright and fine. Counted directly, sixteen roles run through this list, and the fourteenth names the bodhisattva that gives this whole sūtra's opening vision its central figure — not a comparison to Samantabhadra, but a claim that any bodhisattva who cultivates in this way already is one, in exactly this respect.
Part 1197 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-five. Part 1198 turns to Sorrowless Virtue and her spirits scattering flowers over Good-Wealth as he ascends to the hall, and their verse in his praise.
