A Great Lamp for the World
Before Good-Wealth ever ascends the steps of the hall, Sorrowless Virtue and her spirits scatter flowers finer than anything in heaven over him, and sing ten stanzas comparing him to a lamp, a rising sun, a lion of vajra wisdom, and a fire that nothing can put out.
A Great Lamp for the World
Before Good-Wealth reaches the teacher he came for, the spirits of the hall he is about to enter shower him with flowers and a hymn of their own.
爾時，善財童子將昇法堂，其無憂德及諸神眾，以出過諸天上妙華鬘、塗香、末香，及以種種寶莊嚴具，散善財上，而說頌言：「汝今出世間，
為世大明燈，
普為諸眾生，
勤求無上覺。
無量億千劫，
難可得見汝；
功德日今出，
滅除諸世闇。
汝見諸眾生，
顛倒惑所覆，
而興大悲意，
求證無師道。
汝以清淨心，
尋求佛菩提，
承事善知識，
不自惜身命。
汝於諸世間，
無依無所著，
其心普無礙，
清淨如虛空。
汝修菩提行，
功德悉圓滿，
放大智慧光，
普照一切世。
汝不離世間，
亦不著於世，
行世無障礙，
如風遊虛空。
譬如火災起，
一切無能滅；
汝修菩提行，
精進火亦然。
勇猛大精進，
堅固不可動，
金剛慧師子，
遊行無所畏。
一切法界中，
所有諸剎海，
汝悉能往詣，
親近善知識。
At that time, as Good-Wealth was about to ascend to the hall, Sorrowless Virtue and her spirits, with flower-garlands, perfumes, and incense powders finer than anything found even in heaven, together with every kind of jewelled ornament, scattered them over Good-Wealth, and spoke in verse, saying: "You have now gone beyond the world,
becoming a great lamp for the world;
universally, for the sake of every being,
you diligently seek unsurpassed awakening.
Throughout measureless koṭis of thousands of kalpas,
you would be hard to find;
the sun of merit has now risen,
extinguishing the darkness of every world.
You see every being,
covered over by inverted confusion,
and so you give rise to a mind of great compassion,
seeking to realise the path taught by no teacher.
With a pure mind,
you seek out the buddha's own bodhi;
you serve every good spiritual friend,
never sparing your own body or life.
Throughout every world,
you have no reliance and no attachment;
your mind is universally unobstructed,
pure as empty space itself.
You cultivate the practice of bodhi,
and your merit is entirely perfect and complete;
you emit the great light of wisdom,
universally illuminating every world.
You do not depart from the world,
yet neither are you attached to the world;
you move through the world without obstruction,
like the wind wandering through empty space.
Just as, when a great fire breaks out,
nothing at all is able to extinguish it,
so too, as you cultivate the practice of bodhi,
the fire of your diligence is just the same.
Courageous and greatly diligent,
firm and immovable,
a lion of vajra wisdom,
you wander and roam without any fear.
Throughout the whole dharma-realm,
in every ocean of lands there is,
you are able to go to each and every one,
drawing near to good spiritual friends.
汝不離世間，亦不著於世 — you do not depart from the world, yet neither are you attached to the world. The seventh stanza states outright the balance this whole hymn is built around: not renunciation of the world and not entanglement in it, but a third position the wind in the same stanza's own simile makes vivid — passing through everything, held by nothing.
Part 1198 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-five. Part 1199 follows Good-Wealth into the hall itself, where he finally finds the Śākya woman Gopā, seated among eighty-four thousand palace maidens.
