No Thought for Body or Life
Gopā turns from the ten dharmas of Indra's Net to a second list of ten — this time naming exactly how a bodhisattva serves a good spiritual friend, beginning with giving no thought at all to his own body or life.
No Thought for Body or Life
Having named the whole practice, Gopā turns to one piece of it in detail — the ten dharmas by which a bodhisattva serves the good spiritual friend he relies on.
"Child of the Buddha, if a bodhisattva draws near to a good spiritual friend, he is thereby able to cultivate diligently, without retreat, and bring forth the buddha-dharma without end. Child of the Buddha, a bodhisattva serves a good spiritual friend through ten kinds of dharma. What are these ten? They are: giving no thought at all to his own body or life; his mind coveting none of the implements of worldly pleasure; knowing that the nature of every dharma is equal alike; never retreating from or abandoning the vow for all-knowing wisdom; contemplating the real nature of the whole dharma-realm; his mind forever renouncing the whole ocean of existence; knowing that dharmas are like empty space, his mind relying on nothing at all; accomplishing every one of the bodhisattva's great vows; forever being able to manifest throughout every ocean of lands; and purely cultivating the bodhisattva's own unobstructed wheel of wisdom. Child of the Buddha, one should, through these dharmas, serve every good spiritual friend, without ever going against them."
於自身命無所顧惜 — giving no thought at all to his own body or life. The list opens on the most concrete and personal item of the ten and only afterward widens outward — pleasure, the nature of dharmas, the whole dharma-realm, the ocean of existence, empty space itself. Serving a good spiritual friend starts, in this list's own order, with what is closest at hand before it reaches everything else.
Part 1202 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle seventy-five. Part 1203 opens Gopā's twelve-stanza verse, restating this same teaching as a hymn.
