Three Assemblies
Gopā's knowledge widens from the buddhas themselves to the three kinds of assembly gathered at their side — śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas — each described in its own terms, the last in a single dense catalogue running the length of the whole path.
Three Assemblies
Every buddha's assembly turns out to contain three distinct kinds of practitioner, and Gopā's knowledge covers each one differently — the śrāvakas by their wisdom, the pratyekabuddhas by their quiescence, and the bodhisattvas by an entire vocabulary of their own.
I likewise know the different assemblies of those buddhas: within those assemblies there were beings who attained release by means of the śrāvaka vehicle, and I entirely and fully know the wholesome roots that assembly of śrāvakas had cultivated in ages past, together with every kind of wisdom they had attained. There were beings who attained release by means of the pratyekabuddha vehicle, and I entirely and fully know the wholesome roots of every one of those pratyekabuddhas, the bodhi they attained, their liberation in quiescence, their spiritual powers and transformations, their ripening of beings, and their entry into nirvāṇa. I likewise know the bodhisattva assemblies of those buddhas: how those bodhisattvas, from their very first giving rise to the resolve, cultivated wholesome roots, brought forth measureless great vows and practices, accomplished and fully completed every pāramitā and every kind of adornment of the bodhisattva path; and, through their own sovereign power, entered the bodhisattva grounds, abided in the bodhisattva grounds, contemplated the bodhisattva grounds, and purified the bodhisattva grounds; the marks of the bodhisattva grounds, the wisdom of the bodhisattva grounds, the bodhisattva's own gathering wisdom, the bodhisattva's wisdom in teaching and transforming beings, the bodhisattva's wisdom of establishment, the domain of the bodhisattva's vast and expansive practice, the bodhisattva's own practice of spiritual powers, the bodhisattva's own ocean of samādhi, and the bodhisattva's own skilful means; and, in thought after thought, the ocean of samādhi a bodhisattva enters, the light of all-knowing wisdom he attains, the cloud of all-knowing wisdom's lightning he obtains, the forbearance of the real nature of things he attains, the all-knowing wisdom he penetrates, the ocean of lands he abides in, the ocean of dharma he enters, the ocean of beings he knows, the skilful means he abides in, the vows he brings forth, and the spiritual powers he manifests — all of this, I entirely and fully know.
依聲聞乘⋯⋯依獨覺乘⋯⋯亦知彼佛諸菩薩眾 — by means of the śrāvaka vehicle⋯⋯by means of the pratyekabuddha vehicle⋯⋯I likewise know the bodhisattva assemblies. Three vehicles, three assemblies, and three very different lengths of description: a single sentence for the śrāvakas, a single sentence for the pratyekabuddhas, and then a catalogue for the bodhisattvas that outruns both combined many times over — grounds entered, abided in, contemplated, and purified, followed by an unbroken run of eleven further things known "in thought after thought" alone.
